93 Echelon turns slow, then loud metal on metal clang

Recommended Posts

Not sure how best to describe this. Seems to be having a really hard time turning over. Put a brand new battery in, replaced the started, and the breaker switch on the engine. As it turns when it should fire to start you can hear metal clang on metal. Any ideas, please.

The "metal clang" sound could be the flex plate/damper hitting the stops. The fact that it is doing this is not good for it.

Agree with REW, when was the lat time it ran? If recently was the distributor messed with (ignition timing) or anything else. If you have no history of the engine I would pull all the spark plugs out and see if you can turn the engine over by hand before cranking it again.

Thanks. I pulled the sparks plugs and had water coming out of cylinder #3. So research so far suggests a blown head gasket or worse...

Boat was out last weekend. It has had a little trouble starting, but noting major. Last weekend, is when the clang stopped us dead.

Hopefully it's just the head gasket. Is there any water in the engine oil?

Regardless you have to pull the upper end of the engine as a minimum, possible more once you see the extent of what is wrong.
