98 Sportster - Fuel Pump?

Recommended Posts

Rednucleus

New member, 1st post - thanks for having me!!

Buddy has a 98 Sportster 5.7/carb. We ski the course every Wed. Last night we were low on fuel, motor stalled out at the end of a pass and would not re-start. Added 2 gals and still no start. Could not hear the fuel pump running when key cycled on & off and during cranking. Jumped the pump terminals with 12 volts, it ran well. Reconnected pump wires and motor started and ran fine after that and can hear/feel pump running. Original pump was replaced last season. Your comments on this temporary problem appreciated.

Boat ran out of gas. Pump lost it's prime. You solved your problem the most efficient way any one could have. Problem solved.

That pump does not come on until the start cycle. It has a oil pressure sensor on the back of the block near the distributor. Key on /key off won't help on that particular pump. Jumping the pump and priming it is about the only thing you can do. Well done.

Yeah, I'm gonna say you are fine and got it primed again after losing gas. Should be good, especially with a pretty new pump.

So if we had fed fuel directly to the carb would that have also fixed the problem - ie by supplying fuel, motor runs, oil pressure switch is happy, fuel pump turns back on.

Yes it would have probably worked, but the way you did it is safer. If I remember correctly you can jump the oil pressure switch, then it will run on key on. Either way you win.
