How to pull a stuck prop

Recommended Posts

Hopefully someone can give me some pointers...I have a mangled prop that I need to get off to replace, but I am not having much luck getting it to break loose.

I have the nut loosened and the prop puller in place (the bolt on the prop puller is almost all the way in now that I have tightened it so much. I have tapped and whacked the puller with a hammer and a mallet, and have even sprayed the thing with WD-40 to see if it will loosen up. all to no avail.

Any other good tips that I can use to get this thing off? I think my biggest problem is that there isn't much room between the rudder and the prop puller to get in there to hit it with a hammer, but maybe there is a trick to getting it off.

Thanks for any tips you can provide

I would love some help if you are willing....it is my first time pulling a prop so I know I don't have all the tricks yet.

Something I have done that may work. Put the prop puller on tight and walk away. Come back in a couple of hours. It should pop loose. Chances are if the prop is that mangled, the key is sheered too. When you sheer the key, it makes the prop difficult to remove. A heat gun would also assist in the removal if the mallet isn't working.

Are you hitting the prop puller on the end away from the rudder? The end with the fork in it that goes behind the prop?

Did you try putting your sperrys on and taking your shirt off and intimidating it off the shaft?

works every time for me.

I forgot the sperry's...I was going to take my shirt off but I have a really bad sunburn on my back right now which makes it even worse to work on this thing :-/

Put your Chuck Norris shirt on then. That'll do it!

I thought by now one of you guys would have suggested pulling it off with a F150!

If that does not work I will lend you my Ram 1500...

I'll have a Ram 1500 over there later tonight, so we got that covered ;)

Put some heat on the prop hub. If you want some help, let me know - I'm nearby.

Cute, but if you want a reliable tug it would have to be Tundra.

Seriously, a dead blow to the rear of the prop puller has always worked for me.

OOoOo you have a doozie. I've been in the same situation where a stubborn prop would not come off. Ended up having the Cclamp at max turnage and was using my foot to crank it, and after about 10-12 sessions of the same thing with no result.... B00000000000M! It falls off. Scared the s*** out of me. Persistence is key... Also try loosening it and adjust just slightly then keep cranking, and repeat.
