HDS Lid Sealant

Recommended Posts

Hey ya'll. Just finished up grinding and fiber glassing my HDS box. I used 3M 5200 to remount the shaft strut, and was thinking that I would use that to seal the lid on the HDS box, but am now concerned that that stuff might be too permanent. Will 5200 be ok, or do you think I should use something else?

Do you have any pictures of the re-'glassing job?

I didn't document this as well as I should have. But, here's a few of the before pictures. There had been a previous repair attempt, but it was just a few pieces of fiberglass mesh laid at a couple places. Clearly it didn't bond well and water was getting between the old surface and the repair attempt, I could break pieces away with my fingers...

vvvv I have just started grinding on this one, just started to see the original bond.

A couple shots of the finished glass. I put mat down first, then a layer of mesh. About 3/8" thick on the bottom, and 1/4" up the sides. Fingers crossed.

vvvv bubbles came from when I poured the remaining pot in there on top, they are not throughout.

vvvv This is up at the front. The leak was in the back. Up here I just did one layer of mesh. I didn't like this little air pocket, so I ground it open, sanded, acetone then some more glass with mesh.

Thanks for the writeup, As. Great info. That previous repair was more than a bit dodgy!

I suspect that mine may be leaking although at present I think it may just be coming through the joint between the HDS box and the shaft seal spigot flange. How does it typically manifest in the box - I assume tiny hairline cracks develop...? I guess you could actually see water weeping from the culprit area?

Thanks.

Regards, Stephen.

Mine was similar to others that I have read about, and the actual leak was towards the back of the box. I dried everything out, then took the lid off the box and filled the bilge up and watched. It slowly leaking in from the back. After grinding the old repair and stuff out it become even more clear that the water was coming in from the back along a specific area. As a matter of fact, it kept leaking in there and was always damp. I left the boat in the sun with the cover off and used a hot air gun for a while until if was finally dry enough for me to feel comfortable enough to fiberglass. It will really suck if this doesn't work after putting so much time and effort into it, so I sweated all the details.

Thanks for the extra info, As. Was the leak along the side of the box or on the rear face?

Looks and sounds like you've done a quality repair - hope it works!

I plan on delving into mine before next season (just into Winter here). I'm hoping it's just the flange seal but time will tell!

Mine was along the back port side, about 3-4 long area about 2 inches from the back wall. Although due to being boxed in it's difficult to get a good look at what is going on in the very back. 90 degree die grinder really helped back there. I'm not the original owner of the boat, so I don't know if there was an impact, but probably. There are spider cracks around the strut, but there are also similar spider cracks around my gas fill fittings and other areas too.
