Engine stops suddenly and Malivu Reboots - 2011 VLX

Recommended Posts

Enjoying a day on the lake, boat running well, suddenly while pulling a tuber, engine shuts down and Malivu system reboots... Engine won't restart without turning power off at battery and going through startup/security code entry sequence. No Active or inactive codes registered and no other alarms or warnings.... strange and disturbing...

Silver Power button on dash is defective. Bad contacts inside switch. Will eventually happen more and more frequently. It happened on my 2013 LSV. That's my guess.

Your boat disagrees with pulling a Tube. It therefore is shutting off to teach you not to. Just Kidding of course...

Do we need to keep one of these as a spare? Is it easy to replace like 2 quick wire swaps under dash?

Not a bad idea to have a spare since they're cheap, but i'd imagine if you replace it once it probably won't have the problem again. If you are out in the water and it keeps happening, you can unplug two wires on back of button and use a small piece of wire to jumper them together. That's all the switch really does anyways.

I'm LMAO in the "tubing" remarks - very clever and maybe even true! I may have to balance the rider time better...

Already ordered the switch and really appreciate the multiple responses - gives me more confidence hat this is the problem. I really prefer a more analog system for engine control - these electronics are just too unreliable in lake conditions. I'm just waiting for the whole system to fault and not be able to start.

Has anyone installed a manual over-ride to the Malivue system? Thinking of a hidden switch under the helm that I could throw in emergency to get back to dock that would bypass the security code sequence and then a start switch to crank the engine??? My dealer said they couldn't (wouldn't?) do it...

Someone on here has done that as I recall. I forget what year but they come from the factory that way now. IF you really want a keyed backup, hunt around on here I'm very confident someone has done it.

There is a kit you can get from Malibu to add the manual start key that the 2012+ boats come with. There was a thread recently where someone even posted a ballpark price.

Bunji169 just gave me the idea that my power switch may also be going bad. Is that ebay link an adequate replacement or is there an exact replacement I can buy?

Any two contact switch should work. Even a simple toggle. But there are several on ebay that would fit in same hole. Just make sure its On/Off. Do not order one that says "Momentary On"
