Stainless windshield trim

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if a stainless windshield cap or trim piece can be added to a 06 v-ride? I have the flat black painted trim cap right now and it already has a few nicks...nothing major but I wonder how it will look in a couple of years. Just curious if it can be replaced with stainless later if I choose to do so and if so, how difficult is it? I have seen some of the older VLX's with the stainless cap so I know that some folks have them. Anyone?

Thanks for any help

Tim

Take some super fine steel wool and acetone and ever so carefully rub the top cap of your windshield and the paint will come off and you will have bare aluminum. When your done buff it with Mother's mag and aluminum polish.

The whole project took me about 3 hours on my previous bu and it looked sweet. I think it actually looked better than my new stainless.

I was inspired to do this by another Crew member, I just perfected the method. Whistling.gif

I knew you were going to ask, I just deleted the only closeup I had. If you want to PM me your email address I can email you some pics that I have from afar. Its to tough to make them large enough on the site.

Did you tape off the rest of the windshield frame to protect it from the acetone? Or is this not a concern as the acetone alone won't remove the paint w/o the steel wool?

I didn't but you can if it makes you feel better. I just used a rag and dipped the acetone on it and rubbed it on the cap and then scraped it off. I didn't have a problem with the rest of the windshield peeling if any residue acetone got on it and I did it a couple years ago. Picture or not, it basically looks like a new windshield as if it never had the black powder coating in the first place. Use a buffing pad and a dremmel for buffing with the Mothers mag cleaner.

I checked on getting a new SS windshield cap for my '05 vRide thinking that it would be fairly easy to swap with a 2004 vlx because they are the same hull. Apparently the windshields are not though because I was told it couldn't be done. Malibu had provided my dealer with the name of their supplier and a custom job was going to cost $2K+. I dropped it after that, so in a year or two, I may consider stripping it completely as suggested.

Wow for 2k I would just go for the diamond encrusted gold-dust cap! Jeez. Stripping it seems the way to go for sure!

I removed the cap a couple years ago and had it powder coated for 40.00. This after trying it bare for awhile. It did glare a bit and I just didnt want to get used to it. Now the rest of the frame is peeling so this year will probably remove whole thing. Bare in mind replacing the rubber round the glass was a bear soap worked wonders.

Hi Mike,

I have two questions:

1. How is the maintenance? Do you have to do anything to keep it looking good?

2. Has the glare been much of a distraction?

1. Maintenance. I use aluminum polish once a year on it. Makes it look great.

2. To be honest I've never really noticed much of a glare.

Oh and the previous owner used a dremel tool to remove the paint.
