1998 no reverse

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!

I just bought my first boat a 1998 Sunsetter LX. I took her out yesterday and she ran like a champ.. but she would not reverse. My friend was able to get the boat off the trailer and said it took a couple attempts to get reverse to engage but once I got out on the water it didn't seem to work. The tac got up to 4k rpms but the prop did not seem to engage... Any tips or common issues with this year and model?

P.S. already searched the forum for a thread and nothing came up.

Thanks for your help!

Check the linkage and fluid level first. If that is good you gotta start checking pressure in the hydraulic circuits for the forward and reverse clutches.

I would check the shift linkage/cable between the throttle lever and the transmission. My guess is something fell off. You can move the throttle lever with the engine off to check operation. The transmission shift lever should be on the left side of the transmission, usually behind the location of the engine oil filter (or that general area).

Have some one move the throttle lever while watching the transmission shift lever and you should get an idea of how it works.
