1995 Sunsetter exhaust leak and over heat

Recommended Posts

At our last outing, I had an over heating issue and noticed a lot of extra water in the bilge area too.

I had my impeller replaced to fix the over heating issue and the mechanic also noticed the extra water when he was testing the impeller replacement. That's when he discovered the exhaust tube was leaking water into the bilge area.

I thought just calling to order the part would be routine, but since my boat is so old no one is currently up to speed on what parts are actually in the boat. The dealer and every supplier I spoke with needed all the measurements, diameter on intake, diameter on exhaust end, length, angle or no angle, and all required some kind of detailed, lengthy narrative of what the heck I was even talking about. Is it a "silencer"? Is it a "muffler"? (aren't those the same thing?) Is it just an exhaust tube? Is it with baffles, or no baffles? Pricing guess-stimated at me ranged from $99 to $600; seemed a pretty clear indication no one really understood what I needed.

My mechanic was resourceful and one of his sources suggested just glassing over it. So, voila! Fiber glass and resin was the answer!

I will attach photos (when I can figure that out on this forum), and hope they will help to explain what this is about and gives someone else a simple solution for a similar problem.

Yep, it was a "why didn't I think that!" moment. My mechanic charged about $50 in parts, and half hr in labor = $100. EZ-peazy! Took less time than shipping!
