Time for a New Boat

Guys - Well it's time for the family to get into a boat that has a little more room. I had one picked out at the local dealer, deposit made, lake test pending and trade in eval to come. Told them how many hours are on my 99 VLX, approx 1,000 and they said they don't trades with that many hours. It blew me away! All I have heard is that these boats will hit 3,000 no problem. I have the 325 monsoon, she purrs. The boat got an all new interior in 09, new battery setup in 14, moving boxes to the front with all new cables in 14, new interior lighting, new bimini top in 12, new starter in 14, refreshed stereo. My guess is he has a buyer with no trade and is just looking to move on. He didn't even look at it! Am I stuck with a boat that can't be sold? What's FMV? I've seen most that hover around 20k for list.

Frankly, I'd get the deposit back and walk making sure to tell the sales manager exactly why you walked. Then put it up for private sale and you'll probably get more from someone looking for a boat right now than you would from a dealer anyhow. In addition, unless you are dead-set on dealing with that dealer/brand I wouldn't bother to ever darken their door again. They sound like they don't need your business and that's not a good position to be in when you have issues down the road. Just my $.02. Good luck.

This is where I'm at with it. On day one, before the deposit was made I informed them of the hours. Then 4 days later this gets dropped on me.

Sell it yourself, There are lots of people that understand how these boats are made and to not be afraid of the 1000 hour mark. You will get more for yours in a private sale and have a better bargining position with a dealer of private seller for the "new" boat.

Your boat should be an easy sell, V-drives go pretty quickly. Search Craigslist, boat trader Et. al. for similar boats. I shop in this general era for boats and am going to say (without pics or real detail) that you could sell it in a weekend at 17.5k, pretty quickly in the 19-20k range. While many attest to the fact that 1k hours isn't a problem, many buyers will be wary, and you will have to find a more seasoned buyer to recognize this. There was a guy posting just a few hours ago about buying a Sunsetter VLX that torn seats and other issues, maybe he'd like your boat?

In the Midwest they've been going for $18,000-$20,000 with around 700 hours.

I'd try onlyinboard.com and boat trader there aren't hardly any malibu vlx's on there, and of course craigslist.

I think you can get closer to $22-23k range. At least here on west coast. Hard to find older v-drives less than $30k. I think if you listed it for $25k you would get a few offers in the low $20's..

Your dealer has put his best foot forward. If this is how the relationship starts I would not let it go any further. This is the kind of smug arrogance that comes from the protected territory model.

An older boat with 200 neglected hours can be more trouble than one that has been loved maintained with 1000 hours. I'm at 1010 on my 06 and IMO 1000 on a 99 isn't so high really.

In addition to OnlyInboards list it on Ski-It-Again and your local CL. Should have no problem selling if its nice. Now is the time to sell & buy!

IMO, a dealer (of the same manufacturer) should give you more for trade-in than selling in a private sale. Again, just to move product and get more of your boats out on lakes.

If I was a sales guy from other dealers, I'd be calling burider first thing in the morning and making a deal. Business can't be so good that you can turn away a sale.

Dealers can't give you more than a private sell. If they did, they would take a loss on every trade or have a lot full of used boats. They are in business to make money and they make money on the trade. If they don't think they can sell a boat with 1000 hr, that's up to them. But as a buyer we have the ability to walk, which is exactly what I would do.

They can sell any boat as long as it is priced right. If the dealer gives you more on a trade than you can sell it for then they are making up for that with a higher price on the new boat.

I have to think that the dealer is taking trade ins on boats he thinks he can sell. Whether it be the hours, the brand or whatever else, he didn't think he could offer you a fair price and then sell it for profit. Says more about them than anything else.

They did you a favor. You will get more for your boat if you sell it outright. The problem for you of course is that you will likely be boatless for awhile. One of the reasons I did the transaction in the fall/ early winter.

If they're not a wakeboat dealer, they likely have no idea the value of your boat, and don't think they can move it on their lot because they don't normally sell them. I'd move on and if you want to get into a deckboat, or something other than a wakeboat, you're better off selling private sale and then finding what you want at a different dealer.
