1999 Sportster - Pop-up Cleats

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I have a '99 Sportster LX that I am looking into adding four, side, pop-up mooring cleats to and I had a couple of questions for anyone who has a Sportster with factory installed cleats or anyone who has aftermarket installed them:

1. Where along the side did they come factory installed? (any pictures would be especially helpful)

2. I understand from talking to Malibu customer support that the original factory installed cleats were 4 1/2" but have since been discontinued (I want to install Malibu brand cleats).

2a. Has anyone had issues with their 4 1/2" cleats?

2b. Has anyone installed the new 6" Malibu Pop-up cleats in their Sportster? If so, do you ever have issues with rope snagging as they sit more proud than the 4 1/2" cleats pictured in the manual.

- 1999 Manual (Ref. Figure 2-26): https://www.m2omarine.com/resources/Malibu_1999manual.pdf

3. Has anyone had issues with hull strength resulting in cleats pulling out? (Dealer identified that the '99 model year may not have reinforced fiberglass)

On the Response RLX, this is where the factory installed them.

Looking at pictures of sportsters on CraigsList, some where in the same position and some where a little bit more forward too. I'm guess it based on the installer that day at the factory.
