Alternator belt question

Recommended Posts

I took the alternator belt off when winterizing the boat in the fall. I can see the outline of where the tensioner bolt used to sit, but I can't seem to stretch the belt/alternator over that far.

My question is, how tight should the belt be? I can pull it tight, but it isn't as far over as it used to be. Is there a trick or technique to tightening the belt or do you just pull it as tight as you can?

I'd love to get this done tonight as we're heading out to the lake tomorrow morning.

Thanks!

I use a small wood bat to leverage the alternator over then tighten the bolt. If you can turn the alternator by hand under the belt or if it squeals on acceleration it's too loose. Make sure the battery is turned off if you use a metal pry bar.
