Ignition key spins too far and doesn't spring back

Recommended Posts

Today my key did nearly a full rotation when I went to start the boat and would not spring back to the up and down position after letting go. It got stuck on the starter and was making a grinding noise, as soon as you would move the key upward it would be fine. I think I need to replace the ignition, Does anybody know what part needs to be replaced? I don't think its an expensive piece but I'm not sure where to look for this part.

you sure that the whole ign switch isn't rotating (retaining nut too loose) instead of a cylinder problem?

I thought that too, but the starter wouldn't stay engaged if it were just the nut.

yup, you are right.

i did think of that the first time i read the thread and then my poor 'remembery' let me down on the very next pass.

good catch.

If you're cheap like me, you'll spray it with a whole can of lube in hopes that it will start working properly again. Then you'll change the key switch.

yup, same on mine. The key won't spring back and you have to pull it out of "start"

My last boat, I installed an on/off Perko key switch (used in bigger diesel boats) in a tucked away area. Then I installed an toggle switch in line with that on the dash, and a push button Perko for starting. It worked really nicely, flip the switch and push the button to start, flip the switch to shut down. It was pretty much like a NASCAR set up. This was after I went through two key switches from starting/stopping all the time for sports.
