2004 LSV - Wedge Mounting Bolts - Need replacement

Just curious if anyone knows what size bolts (thread / length) are used to secure the actual hydrofoil part of the wedge to the metal extension arms?

I noticed last night that one of the bolts is missing and I would rather not use it until I get that bolt replace.... on an old thread someone mentioned the size was:

1/4x24 (fine thread) SS Flat head @ 1.25" long ... is that a universal wedge size or would anything have changed?

FWIW, I replaced all of the bolts (4 on mine) connecting the wedge foil to the arms, on my 2006 boat, with type 316 SS flat head machine screws 5/16 " - 18 thread 1" length, available at www.mcmaster.com.

They were the perfect replacement.

See here: http://www.mcmaster.com/#machine-screws/=x19ccj

Should be part number 91500A583, $7.37 for a pack of 10.

I replaced mine just as a precaution. I used heat to assist in getting the existing hardware removed. I used Loctite on the threads of the new hardware.

Is yours just missing a screw, or is it broken off?

Not sure, I just noticed the head wasn't there when I was going to drop it down... forgot to look at when we put it on the lift.

My guess is it broke.... which makes for a bigger pain in the a** having to drill the thing out, but maybe, it just came loose.

Does it make sense to just weld these two piece together (+ plus the bolts)?

.... the arms I assume are brass, what is the actual hydrofoil piece made out of?

Not exactly sure, but I think the foil is aluminum. I think the arms may be NiBrAl.

Don't think it would work trying to weld together the dissimilar metals, but I'm no expert.

Some advocate just replacing those machine screws periodically (my plan). But, assuming yours is also a 4 screw mount, some feel it is worthwhile to drill and tap two more.

I've seen pictures of this mod posted on TMC in the past.

Later versions of the manual wedge did, in fact, have 6 screws.

You may get lucky. Once you remove the other three screws and the foil, there is a good chance that the stem of the broken screw will be sticking out enough to get a pair of vice grips on it.

The weak point there is, for the most part, the head of the screw.

So here is what I've got:

Bolt appears to have come loose and fallen out.... I can't see any scenario where the bolt breaks that far down in the threads. So I just have to find the right sized bolt to fit in that hole... I bought a 1" last night, but doesn't quite get down all the way (I also need to clean the threads - lots of sand in there).

Hmm. I suspect that, once you've cleaned it out, irrigated it with some vinegar/acetic acid, or maybe even carefully chased an appropriately sized thread cutter down into it, a 1" machine screw will be your ticket. But, I

think you're right, its very unlikely that the original bolt broke off that deep.

I was moving a chest of drawers, lying in the bed of my pickup, last Fall when we sold our lake house. Amazingly, all of the hardware screws holding the drawer handles were backed out, some all the way, after an hour

and a half drive. I guess that vibration, at just the right frequency, caused all those buggers to back out on their own. Could be what happened to your missing wedge hardware.

Don't forget the Loctite.
