Shaft seal question

Recommended Posts

water pouring through the shaft seal. my question is do you hold the thin nut on the propeller side and tighten the big one or loosen the big nut and tighten the thin one then re- tighten the big one. I cant seem to get ether one to move but leverage is an issue with a v-drive. don't want to force things the wrong way.

The thin nut is the locking nut. Your packing rings are up inside the large nut. Loosen the thin nut, then tighten the large nut to get the desired drip rate from the packing gland. Then tighten the thin locking nut against the larger nut. Try to keep the large nut from rotating while tightening the locking nut. If your packing is shot, tightening the large nut (increasing pressure on the rings) will not stop the water flow.

Thanks Randy. Got it loose and will have her in the water this week for the final adjustment.
