Let's talk MEFI

Ok, then I can use the following type of cables:

http://www.ftdichip.com/Support/Documents/DataSheets/Cables/DS_TTL-232R_CABLES.pdf

Do you know if the signaling is 3.3V or 5V based, or even higher?

My boat is on winter storage at the moment. Once it is back (within a month or so) I'm going to try it. Not sure which ECM version I have...

Why should you connect RX and TX? Then you create a loopback. The ECM will then read all data back that it sends out.

Get the TTl-232R-5V-WE. You can buy it and the MEFI connector from Mouser.com. You probably want:

895-TTL-232R-5V-WE - USB RS232/5V TTL Cable

829-12045808 - Delphi Connector Housing

829-12124264 - Connector Lock (cover)

829-12045773 - Pins (You can figure out how to crimp them with pliers; buy spares)

829-15324973 - Cable Seal (Not required, but the wires fit better with them)

You have to connect Rx and Tx, because MEFI is a single-wire interface. The loopback is OK, and the ECM successfully ignores itself.

I just realized you are in Belgium. Farnell may carry everything, but if you run into trouble, let me know. The Mouser part numbers have a 3-digit supplier code at the front, but are otherwise the supplier's part numbers.

I tend to write my own software, but I have seen Tunerpro before. I don't have a full definition file for my MEFI version, which is essentially what I'm working on.

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum and new to boats actually as well. I am trying to build a MEFI 4 cable to connect to my friend's 2002 Carver 346 ECM. From my research I see there is a free program out there, TunerPro v5.00.8713, that is used in conjuction with their cables that go for $195.

I don't know if I am over simplifing, or if I am following this thread wrong, but is the attached diagram possibly correct? Am I missing a component somewhere or am I completely off?

You think this is all that I would need to use the TunerPro application?

Thanks

Hmmm ... looks like I have stumbled onto the right post. From what justgary has said, it doesn't look like you can get a ton of info from MEFI4 but if the cable illustrated above works with the TunerPro software, that would be awesome. Has anyone had any success in trying it yet?

I also assume you could add a LED and resister from pins E to F if you wish to use the cable as a basic scan tool, as well?

Thanks,

Steve

Headed to lake this weekend. Have my cable in hand and my laptop with TunerPro installed. Do I need to find or create a .XDF file or will TunerPro just display the parameters that are transmitted to it?

Since it seems TunerPro supports ODBII communication as well as MEFI, is there something needed to tell it what type of controller it is talking to or receiving data from or can it figure it out on its own?

As for the switch and LED, I have incorporated them into the cable so that I essentially have a CodeMate for times when a laptop is not available.

Thanks,

Hello,

Justgary,

I have a MEFI3.adx file from TunerPro. I can send it to you (I gueess MEFI2 and 3 are almost the same..3 has more parameters).

This file has the Parameters address/location for the return data (RPM, etc and the trouble codes).

I have a MEFI4b 2004 (that has the ALDL data connector in G, but has also the CAN bus in the DLC 10 pin plug), and a cable with a FTDI TTL USB , where both Tx and RX are connected together to the ALDL G.. and use 5v).

I'm having no return from the MEFI4b.. My guess is I'm sending the wrong Send/request command, so MEFI starts returning data. What is the Send/request command you are using?

Can you send me your program, so I can test if it works in a MEFI4b?

Had rain this past weekend and didn't get to do any testing. I would love to see the MEFI3.adx file and will send you a pm. Aside from, that, I am in the same place as you in that I was wondering how you point TunerPro to the right COM port and if there was a command needed to start the conversation, or if TunerPro just scans the ports and starts monitoring from the time you start the program.

I am also on a 2004 Indmar and while I haven't confirmed, I believe it is MEFI4.

Hello,

Sonnaps, Did your cable work?

Also, can someone comment if the jumper on A and B, is needed when using a software (ex TunerPro RT)? ..

(I had the idea this was used to make the LED blink to return the trouble codes.. and with a 10K resistor, to tell the older ECU to use 8192 baud rate).

thank you,

Old post, I know. The jumper from A to B is only used when "flashing" the codes. It should not be connected when scanning. The ScannerPro package uses a standard OBD1 cable with the 10 pin "Opel" connector. The program is based on a very early version of TunerProRT and the ADX file supplied with it will not work on newer versions of TunerProRT. I do have a better working adx file if anyone wants it. I also have written my own free MEFI-3 scan program for pc that shows much more data than ScannerPro and has graphing and datalogging.

Im going to make my own cable as well, would you be willing to share your scan program you are using?

Sure, it's called MEFI3-Scan. Here it is: http://www.mediafire.com/folder/57ejpvimggf51/MEFI3-Scan

Here is a screenshot of one of the 6 display tabs. Note that nothing is attached to the ECM for this photo except power and the scan cable, so the sensor readings and trouble codes are not typical. This program will only work for the MEFI-3 ecm.

I am getting checksum errors.  Are the tx/rx signals 5v or 3v?

Sorry, I am getting no email notifications on this topic. It's 5v. Can you run it again, this time with the Comms tab open and both boxes at the top (enable comms display and Include idle traffic) checked? Run the scan for about 20 seconds and click on save the Comms screen to file. Post the file here. Are you sure you have an MEFI-3? Other versions would give checksum errors, and I can tell for sure given the Comms file.

If you have an MEFI-1, -2, or -4, we might be able to work together in expanding my program to support the type you have. I just need someone with the ECM to verify correct operation.

I believe my ECM is MEFI-4 but not really sure.  I will get it hooked up today and get some output and post it so you can look at it.  It would be great if you were able to get it working with all ECM's

There is no signal echoed back to the pc but there is signal coming from the ECM. That leads me to believe that the receive function of the cable is working but the transmit function is not.  I suspect that the RXD wire in the cable is not connected to the TXD wire. What color wires did you use in the USB cable?

You can download this loop-back test program to test the connections in the cable. It is an "exe" file, so your pc may object to downloading it.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/1e9jbdx2eqifx1y/OBD1_loopback_test.exe

When you run it, select the same com port as before, leave the checkbox checked, and click on run with the cable attached to nothing but the pc. The screen should look like this with 00, 01, 02, 03.... etc in the box below Run. If nothing appears, the TXD and RXD wires are probably not connected together.

I want to add an image but can't. Do I need more posts to be able to do so and, if so, why could I do it before?

Im using an FTDI module connected via USB to my PC which has the RX and TX pins marked on the module.  I was just using jumper wires to connect to the ECM connector so I might not have got a good enough connection.  I will work on rigging up a better connection tonight after work and see if I can get better results.  I'll also try the loopback test program.  Thank you for all your help on this!

This is the results with both rx and tx connected together.  The RX and TX LEDs are both blinking so I know the connection is good.

I think we may be getting somewhere now. Download this new version, still an early trial and will not work fully, but it can help me get started on a working version. Do the same as before and post the file. Engine does not need to be running yet. Thanks.
