Dripless Packing leaking at 80 hours?

Recommended Posts

Hello I am new to the dripless packing setup, I have a Malibu 247 with only 80 hours and the dripless packing is leaking. Is this normal with such low hours? Are there any adjustments that can be made? Or does the whole thing need replaced? Is there any maintenance that should be taken so this does not happen? Thanks!

Have you checked to make sure the hose clamps are still on it? Mine started leaking at roughly 90 hours, thought there could be a big problem - and turns out both of the hose clamps that were supposed to be on it had broken apart. I put two new clamps on and back in business - the clamps that come on it originally are not very durable.

Yes, both hose clamps are intact. It appears there is a steady stream coming from the center right beside the shaft. Im not sure if there is an adjustment I can make or if the whole thing needs replaced or what...

Do a google search on PSS Shaft Seal Maintenance and go to their site (I'd cut and paste the link but this site won't let me do that from IE). They have a whole video on how to inspect, replace and adjust the seal. A lot of leaks occur far from where you see the leak. If I had to guess on a boat with 80 hours you either have fouled the meeting area between the stator and rotor or the seal is out of adjustment. The site covers both aspects of fixing either issue.
