HELP-Water Getting In Boat

Recommended Posts

I have a '94 Echelon that is taking on water. When the boat is up on plane there is water on the carpet in the rear of the boat on the driver's side. I think the boat spray is entering the boat through the rubrail and going between the carpet and the floor in the area behind the speaker panel, because the side of the boat is wet in this area. Is there a way to fix this problem somehow? Any help is appreciated.

Is there any obvious cracks or missing sections on the rubrail? How is the rubrail connected to the side of the boat? Is it with rivots or screws? Are those lose or missing? Can you look under the side gunwells and see how far up the side of the boat the wetness starts? I am sure someone who actually knows what they are talking about will chime in...thats just where I would start looking Dontknow.gif

The rubrail is not damaged and is in good shape. Rivots are what attaches it to the boat and none appear to be lose or missing. The wetness starts at the top of where the carpet begins and this is at about the same height as the rubrail. I'm not positive that this is where the water is coming from, but I am wondering why the carpet is wet at the top and down the side. The carpet isn't as wet as it is at the floor.

I had the same problem with my '92 mystere. I just got some sealant (RTV) and covered all the rivets on the inside of the gunwells. I couldn't reach them all, but it significantly reduced to water in the bilge.

Check the hoses that run up to the speedo's.

If this is the problem, one of your speedo's will be reading low, if at all.

Could be coming through the bow eye ( a common problem) and running back when you take off.

My right side speedometer does read low compared to the left side. It sounds like the hose to the speedometer could be where the water is coming from indeed. I hope this is the problem and not something more serious. Just wondering how the speedos work on air pressure if water is in the hoses and how far up will the water travel in the hoses?

The water can only travel up the line to the point of the leak (may slightly beyond). To test this theory, pull the hose off the pitot pickup and see if the water stops coming into the boat. On my echelon, the right pitot was the left speedo. I had a hose come off the back of the speedo once, you'd be surprise how much water would flow out from behind the dash at waterskiing speeds.
