Valve lash procedure

Recommended Posts

I have a 2002 Malibu response with an indmar 325hp 5.7 fuel injection engine. I have removed the cylinder heads and refitted but was chasing some more info on how to adjust the valves. I am about 90 % sure this engine has hydraulic lifters ? I am a motor bike mechanic by trade and am used to using feeling gauges and clearances but not sure on how to set hydraulic valve train ?

Also after I reassemble can someone tell me how to correctly time the engine . Ignition timing that is.

Regards navigator

You are correct, your engine does have hydraulic lifters, therefore there is no valve lash, just lifter preload. Very common procedure on a small block Chevy, just do a web search.

To time your engine you have to put it in "service mode". This can by shorting pins 1 & 2 together on the service port. The you set the timing as you normally would with a timing light.

Thanks deck hand. Today I found a tech bulletin from crane cams on how to adjust hyd lifters and followed it to a tee. Pretty much put the valve on the correct stroke, give it zero lash and then went 3/4 of a turn. I am confident I have down this correctly.

can you give me a little more info on how to set ignition timing. When I looked for the service port I found a couple of plugs that could be the service port and they have letters not numbers ?

When I install the dizzy can I be 180 deg out ?

I have cylinder 1 at top dead centre with marks aligned on flywheel.

What is the timing set at 10 deg BTDC ?

Any help will be appreciated I have a usa made boat but I live in Australia and Malibu Australia don't wont to know me :( . But I here on the grape vine Malibu USA is buying Malibu Australia this would be great :)

You're right, I just remember that the 2 pins you short (you can use a paper clip) were the first 2, they are pins A and B.

Yes, you could install the distributor 180 out. Just make sure both valves on cylinder #1 are closed at TDC when you install it and you will be OK.

Timing is 10 before.

Yeah the hardest part is just making sure you are at the top of the stroke and adjusting the right cylinder. It's fairly easy though. I generally do a 1/4-1/2 turn. The higher the rpm the less you do. You can do it while the engine is running too but be prepared for a mess. What you can do is take an old set of valve covers and cut a window out of them to adjust.
