At WOT, tach has a little tick.

I ran my Sportster for the 1st time this year and at WOT it was running great except that the tach would jump way up for an instant every few seconds. Is it a ground problem?

I had this problem on my Echelon a couple times. If you pull the tach, on the back is a rotary switch for 4/6/8 cylinder engines. That switch can get corroded, so I switched it back and forth several times to clean the contacts, make sure that it is put back at 8 cylinder. Put it back in, and it worked fine. Cant say for sure that's what it is, but it's something to try.
