ACME V-drive Prop Comparison Guide

There seems to be a lot of prop discussion lately, with suggestions that may not include the latest and greatest stuff available from Acme. I decided to compile a list, with the following criteria:
- Acme 4-blade only
- Only stuff that will work with a Malibu V-drive (though the bigger props may/may not have sufficient clearance for your hull)
- Nothing that will have less pull or diameter than a 381, which is the lowest pull prop Malibu seemed to have put on these boats

Props will be listed in weakest to strongest pull at each prop diameter. As a BASIC guide, the lower the pitch at a given diameter, the more aggressive the prop will be but with a higher RPM across the board. Cup is the same way, the lower the cup, the more aggressive compared to the same pitch/diameter. Diameter helps reduce prop slip at the added expense of drag – it becomes more important in very heavy ballast setups and high HP setups (LS3/LSA/8.1L).

**Note, this is based on my best guess from prop specs only. I am not an expert. Results may vary hull to hull. Tops speed/RPM may be different from how well it pulls – this is a general guide that can hopefully help others out.

Acme Part Number – Diameter x Pitch / Cup

381 – 13.5” x 17.5” / .105

I pulled all of these specs off of Wakemakers and I’m sure I’m missing a few. Those in bold are props mentioned/used regularly. Please let me know if I am missing any worth adding and I will modify this list. If you feel any of those not bolded are choices that are really worth considering, let me know that as well. Of course let me know if I have any mistakes on this chart so I can correct them.

Also to note, none of this is comparing diameter to a different diameter. For max pulling power, the 15” props are the current thing to have.

EDIT:  List updated 5/11/16 as a number of new props have been added.

Has anyone ever tried a 1615? Iam trying to get a little bit more bottom end with out loosing too much top speed. 2014 LSV 6.2 450 hp. 3500 ft altitude.

ish. 2079 will blow a 2277 out of the water on holeshot, I'd guess. From the butt dyno 1433 and 1235 were indistinguishable on my boat.

(this is a great idea btw. It would be awesome to see comparisons between props of various pitches and diameters performance wise, not just on paper)

That chart isn't as useful for a Malibu V-drive owner. Shows props that won't fit, wrong rotation, DD props and lists plenty of size/pitches most of us V-drive owners wouldn't be interested in.

I wanted a list that actually applied directly to us.

For sure, hence my statement that 15" is the current thing to have, but in no way was I comparing this diameter to different diameter. A lot of the smaller diameter props will out pull the 2277, but similar spec smaller diameter "should" pull a little less in many cases.

As for your 1433 vs 1235, they were likely the same pull power. The 1433 should have pulled better (on paper) but probably had more slip, so there was what may have been a nearly equal trade off.

I am not sure what the stock prop is, but i upgraded to a 1235, which made a world of difference, but i am about to try a 2315, which i understand is the way to go with the vlx 350hp. michigan altitude....

I had the 2249 on my VLX with monsoon and it did not pull as well as the 1235. RPM did drop at board and surf speed (less slip) but at the cost of hole shot.

Huh....I am running the 2247 with my Monsoon and feel that my holeshot is better than with the 1273 and 1235 I was running. It pops up on plane faster loaded and unloaded. I should put on each prop (1273 and 2247, sold the 1235) and see if my butt dyno is correct.

The RPM drop wasn't because of less slip, but because of more surface area to push water. Its closest equivalent in a 14.5" would be the 1941. The 1235 is a more aggressive prop than the 2249. Closest comparison to a 1235 in a 15" prop would be a 2391, which folks don't talk about much (its not even on Wakemaker's site).

So diameter has no effect on prop slip when heavy weighted at surf speeds? Interesting. My boat seems to slips the heck out of the stock 537, but much less with the 1235, and even more so when running a prototype 14.75 diameter prop from OJ.

Yes and no. All props slip – what you could have had was excessive slip with the 537. Going to 1” bigger (1235) may have resolved that, along with being a more aggressive prop. Move to a 15”, if you weren’t having a slip issue with the 1235, would not be a change in slip.

The 2249, though, has the same pitch/cup as the 1235 but is .5” larger diameter. This alone will have more drag in the water AND more push more water per rotation (due to increased surface area), so therefore would be a lower RPM as a result for a given speed.

I recently switched to the 1615 on my 2013 VLX. I'm very happy with it. I currently have the 2315 and the 1615 and I prefer the 1615--it will be the prop I keep when I switch to a new boat. Like you, I want a little more top speed than the 2315 offers. I get about an extra 1.5 mph over the 2315.

My feeling is you would have seen the same MPH gain going from the 2315 to the 2313.

^^^That is very possible. I considered having my 2315 recupped to the 2313 for $60 at our local prop shop. I ultimately decided to get the 1615 instead and leave the 2315 OEM. I also feel that the 15" props have more prop torque and cause the boat to lean more towards the driver side of the boat, which for me is bad, since I surf regular.

Hi Crew, I have recently purchased a 2006 21' Vride with the 320LCR engine. We are recreational skiers who do everything from Wakeboarding, Skiiing, barefooting & airchair. Haven't yet tried surfing as have only had the boat out once since I bought it & its now winter downunder.

Its currently running an Acme 537 prop which appears to do what I want, however it does have some damage so I would be looking to replace it in the future.

I want to have plently of holeshot for pulling up 3-4 adult skiers &/or footers, but still achieve 42+mph for footing. The 537 currently tops out at 47mph flat out which I'm happy with. (cant remember the rpm for sure, but it was somewhere around 4300)

Question is, is this the right prop for me & just replace it with a new one the same or is there another that would suit better? The middle of the wake is quite turbulent at footing speeds but I assume that is the four blade prop as opposed the the 3 blade i'm used to on my Lewis excel 1850. Would a different prop be less turbulent?

Not sure about the turbulence in the wake but if you like your top speed, don't drop pitch down more than like a Acme 1939, which I think replaced the 537 as the stock prop on newer boats.

I doubt you are actually getting 47MPH. Did you verify that via GPS or are you just going on what the speedo says?

1939 would be a good replacement - shouldn't loose any top speed but gain a tiny bit of pulling power.

Your speed may be close but the tach seems be off. We have similar hulls,(yours is actually heavier with taller top side deck) same engine, and with the 537 mine does 45-46@5400RPM (rev limiter). You may want to check both.

Going from a 537 to an OJ Fusion, we gained pull and dropped WOT RPM, and kept about the same speed, the middle of the wake seems to have more of a roster tale with the Fusion.

I guess it is finally time to get another prop for our boat, as the wife damaged our spare last fall.

My situation is a bit different than most on this hull, as I have the LS1 motor that most don't have (375HP and 5800RPM redline, so more power and RPM to work with).  I also weight her pretty heavily for this hull; surfing is typically 900lbs in the locker, 300 under the port seat, 500 in the ski locker, 300 under the front seat, now running 300lbs of lead throughout plus a floating wedge.

Current prop is a 1939 which is a great all-around prop.  Because of our typical use (little cruising, lots of surfing, very little travel time on the water), a little more aggressive main prop would be appropriate for us.  That said, the popular 15" option - the 2315 - is simply too much prop and useless for this boat.

I want to go with a slightly more aggressive 15" prop, or may consider the 15.5" if it can clear (I'll have to measure for that, as I have a feeling it will be too close).  I do not have any issues pulling up with our currently 1939, even when weighed down for wakeboarding (assuming I have enough bow weight), so I want a little more pull, not a lot more.

On the 15" side, I think a 2249 or 2391 would probably be the most logical choices.  On the 15.5" unit, the 2923 would be the only one I could possibly consider.  Thoughts?

I have the 2419 and it's a freakish monster. I would say do the 2313. If you ever get to the west side I can take you out. I am going to have my prop re-cupped to a 2313 and hope for a tiny bit more top end. Nobody needs this much pull, but it is fun!

Edit: If you ever want to swap for a weekend I would consider it. I am curious about the 1235.

I've got an 08 VLX and was told that I could not run a 15" prop with my hull. Have you had any issues? I am considering the 2315 or the 2419. You are the best bet I have found for some real world info/results. Currently running a 1235.
