Loose bottom fin help!

Recommended Posts

Can anyone advise on what to do about a loose fin that is letting in water?

My marina wants to charge my $5000 to repair it. I think they are off base?

Ideas?

It's a 2004 LSV 22. We didn't hit anything but after the bilge was working more than it should have I pulled it and found that one of the two fins was loose. Probably has 3/16" of play so it's obvious that water would be entering boat. Marina told us they spoke with Malibu and they said that bolts that hold fins are screwed into fiberglass that has apparently been stripped out. I have asked why not fill they with a high grade fiberglass and retail holes?

Does that sound reasonable?

Has anyone had experience with loose fins?

Thanks

No such thing as a 22' LSV.

That said the marina is trying to rip you off. Run, don't just walk, away from this place. Most likely a bolt-thru fin. Pull tank, dry out, marine sealant and tighten bolts. It's a bit of a pain to pull the tank but you can do the whole job by yourself with minimal hand tools in a few hours. Biggest paint is pulling the interior as the rest is pretty simple.

Pulling the tank will be the hard part everything else is easy. $5000 is totally BS. I would say $500 would be fair.

Empty the tank, pull the tank, remove bolts, clean out caulking, re caulk with marine caulking, replace bolts, replace tank, let dry for 72 hours you used allot of caulking and you're ready to go.

I had a similar situation in my 00 vlx. I think our situations may be different as my fins are blind bolts from the inside of the hull. Your fins may be screwed/bolted from outside (which may be better?).

In my situation I had to remove the ENTIRE interior to remove the gas tank. This was a LOT of work as it's a domino effect of removing a bunch of crap to remove the seat base to remove the gas tank... a total frustrating mess.
