Heater Install Questions

Hi everyone,

I've been looking over quite a few Heater Craft install threads prior to jumping into my own install and still have a few questions. I already have the heater (no hoses, relays or brass motor fittings) and a Johnson CM30 pump. So here are my questions...

- Any estimate of how much heater hose I need for a VLX? I estimate 2 lengths of about 15' should suffice or is that too much, or not enough? Only $1.37/ft but why be wasteful or short....

- Looking for wiring and relay advice. Would like to wire it into my MaliView and I understand there should be an unused heater connection available somewhere in the helm area. Any help with this would be great.

- I believe I need a 1/2" NPT that goes into a 5/8" barb. Two of them. I saw on another install that they used a 90degree bend coming out near the thermostat (top pic). Anyone else do that too?

- I plan to mount the pump in the transmission/bilge area. That said, which line from the motor should be connected to the pump? The top one or the bottom one?

I can only help you with the barb right now. You do need two 1/2" male pipe to 5/8" male barb fittings. I'm still trying to figure out if I can get a 90 on the intake manifold on my Monsoon, because I think it will bump the fuel rail on the way by as I install it. I'd rather have the 90 if I can make it fit, but don't want to pull the fuel rail to do it.

I don't need a pump (I have fresh water cooling), but I think you just want to make sure that your pump has the fluid flowing out of the intake manifold and back into the water pump housing.

I plan to install a ball valve in the heater line so I can completely shut off the heater when it's 95* out.

I did figure out which port off the motor to connect to the pump, the top one/intake manifold. It has a small blue placard that says "To Heater". I recall another thread with someone making a joke about that. So I guess I got that figured out.

To make a 90 off of the intake manifold it might require two doing it out of two pieces so you don't have to disassemble your fuel rail.

95 degrees!...I have my doubts we'll reach 80 this year around my parts.

You near P'cola? I went through flight training there many years back.

I used a 1/2"x4" nipple to raise up under the intake plenum and be able to spin a 90 on. I positioned the 90 so that the hose ran under under the intake plenum towards the bow and down and down into the stringer, my unit is in the observer compartment.

I found a small 90 yesterday at Ace. It looks like it will spin past the rail. I can't start the project until next week.
