Grounding

Recommended Posts

In a training class at work today we got into a discussion about grounding.

In a truck the engine is grounded to the frame which is steel. To what is an inboard grounded?

Also, where does the ground from the battery go to complete the circuit?

Truck. Engine and battery both grounded to chassis (and so connected to each other):

++++++++++++++++

Engine Battery

------------chassis---------

Boat engine grounded directly to battery:

+++++++++++++++++

Engine Battery

------------------------------

It's the grounding back to the battery that completes the circuit, not the chassis. The chassis is just a conductor like a wire.

In the old days of steel bumpers on cars, you could touch the bumpers together and jump start a car with one cable from positive to positive. Not a grand idea though.

And absolutely not workable today.

In a boat with no ground plane, alternator grounds to block to complete the circuit and the battery grounds to the block to complete the circuit.

Its funny to see cut ground wires attached to tower mounting bolts.
