Flake gel repair

Recommended Posts

With all of the new boat threads out, I'm seeing a lot of metal flake. Is it possible to repair gel with metal flake? Does it end up looking as good as new like repairs with non-metalic flake gel? Has that influenced anyone's decision on gel schemes?

My grandfather/father/uncles have repaired boats for years. I can say with confidence that Metal flake can be repaired with as good a result as solid colors.

I was told it may cost in the magnitude of 5x more expensive than solid colors and very difficult to match perfectly (but still doable/done). This influenced my decisions a bit on what parts of my boat I wanted metal flake or solid (high wear areas, etc).

I had to have a couple of scratches cleaned up on my orange flake and you cannot find where the blemish was.

Were the scratches into the flake or before the flake in the clear??

Both. The boat got damaged in Washington at Banks lake in a bad storm and our gel coat guy did an unbelievable job.
