Exile Harpoon protect light

I have an Exile 1000 watt Harpoon amp with the protect light illuminated. All zones seem to be operational. Have not had time to investigate yet but will this weeknd. Looking for things I will need to check to run down this situation.

Fortunately amplifiers are simple. You have five external connections to diagnose.

1) Remote turn-on. Since your amplifier is 'On' and in 'Protect' the remote voltage should be fine.

2) Primary positive supply.

3) Primary negative supply.

Check the voltage across these two terminals, not at the battery. Since your amplifier is 'On' but remaining in protect, low voltage is unlikely the problem but you need to start here. Microprocessors can get wiggy with low voltage.

4) RCA inputs. DC offset can trigger the 'Protect' mode in some amplifiers. So simply unplug the RCA inputs for a status LED change. Again, unlikely if all else in the system is functional.

5) Speaker outputs. Check the DC resistance with a meter of both channels. Eliminate one speaker load at a time until you have no speakers attached at the amplifier terminals and look for a change in the 'Protect' status. If the status changes you will narrow your focus to that particular load. If status does not change then you have to suspect something internal rather than external.

Do not dis/connect anything while the amplifier is powered up.

Also, try a hard reset on the amplifier's microprocessor (controls the protect circuit) by pulling the primary connections, let rest for 10 minutes, and reconnect the ground before the positive.
