Starter ground

Recommended Posts

I think I remebered seeing a seperate ground wire on a starter the other day. I wasn't looking that hard, though. The motor should ground to the engine block via it's bolts to the bell housing.

Does the starter have to be mounted to the engine for its ground?

On your boat it does. The ground wire is near the back of the block and the starter is grounded through the engine block. If your bench testing your starter you will have to run a ground wire or jumper to the body of the starter for it to work.

Thanks Mike,

Thats what I was doing, my starter went out and I had it rebuilt, but before I installed it I wanted to test it. I hooked the wires to it but it would not work. I went ahead and installed it assuming it needed to be grounded to the block, I was not sure, and it worked once installed. Just wanted to make sure I was not missing anything.

I appreciate the input.
