Blue Top Batteries...anything better???

My 2nd battery for the stereo is on its last leg, looking at going to the blue tops to be able to mount them under the observers seat. For those that have Blue Tops what size and type did you use for starting the engine and running the stereo?

I have 3 of the deep cycle blue's. They are awsome. I put mine under the side seats. They fit perfectly under there so it gives you more room in the compartment.

Did you have to modify the length of the battery cables to get them under the seat? Also, do you put a cover over them so water from the observers seat doesn't get on the battery itself?

Sam's Wholesale gave me a price of $140.32 for the Blue Top D34M and $116.06 for the Blue Top 34M anyone find a better price than that?

If you have several $$$ laying around, Dana Marine has Billet Battery tie downs and Billet Covers.

Nice stuff!

I really just want to protect the terminals from a possible short. I thought those Optima covers look decent.

The local battery distributor, where I always get my marine batteries, told me that the gel batteries only last about 3 years. That's what I usually get out of a $38 group 4 12v. Does anyone have a story to rebut his claims? I find it difficult to justify $125 for a battery that isn't any better. What's the scoop??

I had them in my last boat (SAN) and they lasted 5 years. I was running 2 alternators to keep all 5 of them charged but I had no problems with them. They were Yellow tops but the only difference is the terminals. I think they are worth their money for me and big sound systems.

Mine has been in my Sporty for 4 years now. I got it 9 years ago to use to power an electric trolling motor on my canoe, which I did for five years. Sounds like your "local battery distributor" doesn't carry Optima and wants to sell you something else. Go back there and give him the... Fingerwag.gif Liar, Liar, Pants On Fire. Fingerwag.gif

The Optima Blue Tops are not gel batteries they a third type (AGM) Absorptive Glass Mat. They are at least a hundred dollars better Biggrin.gif

Exide Orbital Batteries are also AGM batteries. They are currently the choice battery for Electric Drag Racers because they are 10% lighter. Both Exide and Optima have lower internal resistance than Gell Batteries so they charge much faster and contain more power (Rated 55 AMPS for one Hour).

AGM batteries are made to take a beating...Gel batteries are not. If you are in rough water or in off road use the AGM will last much longer than Gel Batteries.
