I am looking at headunits as well. Went up to Earmark today and played with a couple. Looked at Alpine and Kenwood and the Kenwood Excelon 897 and 997 really impressed me. I'm thinking I am going to throw the 897 in the boat.

The 997 has far better EQ settings than the 897 (plus HD radio, though I don't consider that worthwhile personally). The $200 vs $140 price is pretty steep for the better EQ, but I think I'd be willing to part with the extra $60, unless you are running an external EQ of course.

My compliant with the Kenwoods was only a single rear USB input and requires the 30 pin to Lightning adapter, which adds another $30 to the price for me.
