need tool advice for unscrewing water strainer

Recommended Posts

I have an inline strainer in my boat that looks something like the one in the photo. It is not very accessible and gives me fits every year when I winterize...today was no exception.

I normally try to use one of those Craftsman rubber strap wrenches, and eventually get it to budge (yes I do put silicone or vaseline on the rubber gasket when I reinstall).

Any better suggestions....maybe a really large pair of adjustable pliers?

All of these have been great suggestions to unscrew that strainer bowl. I encountered the same problem. Since then, I use anti-seizing compound on the threads. Now it unscrews by hand and it does not leak. So, once you get that bowl off the strainer you might consider a similar strategy. Just a friendly suggestion.

Warm water. I screwed around with mine for about twenty minutes before I thought of running warm water over the threads. Once it was warm it came off with little difficulty. I didn't tighten it nearly as much when I put it back together.
