GPS Phone App

Anyone running a Marine GPS phone app? With my recent topic about cruising long distances by water I was thinking about getting a sat nav for the boat. One that I can load marine charts into. I was looking around and there are several phone apps available. Wondering if anyone is using one or has a suggestion.

I'm thinking it would come in handy for trips home in the dark.

I really want to get something that shows depth, there are some reefs in Lake Champlain that can sneak up on you, especially in the dark... I'd love something that could track your course. I've used that in my buddies 30' Cobalt when I pull the short straw and end up DD. It totally takes the guess work out of getting home. Just follow the line you made on the way.

MotionX-GPS. It has several different map types that would be useful on a waterway, including NOAA Marine maps. It uses cell service to load the maps, so if you are going to a cell-denied area you need to pre-download the maps, which the app can do. It works well but it eats the battery very quickly, so you will want to keep the phone plugged in and charging while running it.

I use Navionics marine app on the ipad and the iphone. Using it on the Ipad is better. Depth contours etc, very detailed. You can plot your course and follow it. It works well enough that I think you could get home in zero visibility.
