GPS Phone App

Anyone running a Marine GPS phone app? With my recent topic about cruising long distances by water I was thinking about getting a sat nav for the boat. One that I can load marine charts into. I was looking around and there are several phone apps available. Wondering if anyone is using one or has a suggestion.

I'm thinking it would come in handy for trips home in the dark.

I just navigated Shasta using Google Maps a few weeks ago. Doesn't show depths or aemnities but it worked fine for finding our way around, especially in the dark.

I really want to get something that shows depth, there are some reefs in Lake Champlain that can sneak up on you, especially in the dark... I'd love something that could track your course. I've used that in my buddies 30' Cobalt when I pull the short straw and end up DD. It totally takes the guess work out of getting home. Just follow the line you made on the way.

MotionX-GPS. It has several different map types that would be useful on a waterway, including NOAA Marine maps. It uses cell service to load the maps, so if you are going to a cell-denied area you need to pre-download the maps, which the app can do. It works well but it eats the battery very quickly, so you will want to keep the phone plugged in and charging while running it.

I use Navionics marine app on the ipad and the iphone. Using it on the Ipad is better. Depth contours etc, very detailed. You can plot your course and follow it. It works well enough that I think you could get home in zero visibility.

That looks pretty awesome. We don't do a lot f boating on bigger waters but that would probably be nice to have just incase. I'm assuming it's an app that you have to pay for, how much is it?

I like navionics too. I think it was about 10 bucks. Well worth it. I used it at Beaver Lake in Arkansas last year. I had never been there and the app worked great!

I think it was less than $20 on iPhone and either $49 or $99 on iPad. You can get different regions etc. Don't need all of them.

That looks PERFECT!

Do you have to be connected to wifi to get it to work on the iPad?

Just answered my own question... No go on the iPad without wifi / 3G.

I'll probably just run my iPhone. I have a nice windshield mount for it. Should be perfect.

Another vote for navionics. No need for phone service. Got stuck in fog one night coming across my lake , got me back safely.
