How far do you go?

How far do you all usually travel by boat? Typically I stay in our bay for boarding and I've gone as far as 12 miles to find flat water. I've been mapping out some dinner options that are 17-19 miles by water. Hoping next year to venture a little further and it made me think I wonder how far people usually take their tow boats.

On a calm night going 20 miles doesn't worry me at all, but coming out of dinner and having the wind pick up could be an issue.

Lake Barkley/Kentucky Lake- 1-3 miles to restaurants watersports areas

Lake Anna- 1-5miles +. depends on what you were after.

Lake Lawtonka- seriously 300ft for watersports. As soon as you exit the marina. No restaurants or anything like that on the lake... party cove/beach is 3/4 mile.

Lake is about 7 miles across, and we always head to the other side. From there we may go north another 4-5 miles. I'd guess on a typical day we could be anywhere from 7-12 miles from the ramp at any given time, and we may cover up to 30 miles in a big loop.

There are 4 coves within about 3-4 miles of my marina (where my after-boating restaurant and bar is located). 3 of them are for riding and 1 is for people watching and hanging out. Most I've gone on my home lake is about 8-9 miles. Might venture further next year but for now I have everything I need pretty close.

so I did the conversion to miles from KM's to keep with the miles theme:

dinner I usually head up one of the inlets about 3 miles, nice place to eat, or around the corner about a mile to another nice place

boarding......I can usually find flat water within a mile or two of the launch but on weekends will board starting at about 2 miles from the launch and run a straight line to the top of the inlet which i think is about 8 to 9 miles from the launch. I only do this as I seem to get away from any other boats (ok and the scenery is beautiful). Think I am only about 6 or 7 miles by water to Vancouver but never go that way..............

I want to do some more touring next summer. Might do some camping too. There is an island about 20 miles from my dock that has a really cool boat in only camp ground.

Don't you find it impossible to camp on your own lake. I LOVE camping, specifically backpacking and canoe camping. Even aluminum boat camping on fishing trips but I could never come to camping out on the lake where our cottage is. The work/gain is out of whack knowing I could be at the cottage or on the bu on the exact same stretch of water.

about 3 miles to the other side of the lake. There are only two boat ramps for the whole lake. Ours is on bigger water. The other side of the lake is more narrow with better fingers. So we drive for a few minutes to get there.

I can totally see your point. its a little different cause my house is at the lake. Going camping is like a little vacation. If I had a camp / cottage, that would be the vacation spot!

20 to 40 miles one way is pretty common on most of my trips to the big lakes (Lake Powell and Lake Havasu) it's not necessarily to find good water but to just go to our favorite beach/cove. We usually go out between 9 and 10 am back by sunset

I've taken the Malibu 10-20 miles to cruise for food before. Over the last weekend the water was crappy so we decided to go out for dinner and drinks instead. I was a little nervous about the boards sitting on the racks as the docks were a fair walk from the restaurant, but it ended up being fine. As a bonus I rarely have to pay for food/drinks when taking friends out since they usually feel obligated to cover my bill!

the section behind my house is always glass, with zero traffic, so boarding there is perfect. But I don't surf there because I don't like throwing a 3ft wave into the neighbor's docks and boats, so we'll usually go a mile or two away to an section with no docks around, to be courteous.

The lake we regularly go to has a marked channel that you need to follow out to get to the main body of the lake. The channel is about 5 miles. From there the lake extends another 12 miles to the end. On occasion we will go to the end, but usually find a somewhere in the middle to do watersports/relax.

I have been caught in a couple storms while at the end of the lake. It makes for an interesting trip back home....
