Need help with surfing ballast

Recommended Posts

Went wakesurfing for the first time today and me and my girlfriend done great for first time out. But I don't think I have enough weight or its not set up right, so I was wanting yall thoughts.

I have a 1987 malibu sunsetter with 2 450 fat sacks in a '' L'' shape on the floor in the back right corner. I feel like there is not enough push to the wave so we can let go of the rope and just ride the wave. Didn't know if it was weight problems or just need more time out on the board. Thanks in advance

You have to consider prop type, speed, hull design, water quality, ambient tempurature, sexual preference, general demeanor, bank balance and organizational allegiances in your set up.

Play with each and see what results you get.

Weight the whole surf side of the boat. Move one of the 450's next to the engine cover. I doubt 900 lbs will get you much wave on a direct drive boat, I would think your gonna need more.

Could be a combination of not enough weight and needing more time on the board. I haven't seen any of my friends pick it up there first attempt out. Usually by the 3-4th day they get it. I would try getting a few more sets in first, but more weight is always better, lol!

In my old Sunsetter, I used to run a 1100 placed along the side, as far back as possible (bench seat up); a 280 sack in the ski locker; and a 280 placed right in front of the observer seat or in the surfside bow (depending # of people in the boat) and had decent results. I did not use the wedge with this setup.

Working with what you have - I'd would probably add a 750 & place it in the rear corner under the bench. Then try one 450 along the side, and the other in the walk through. Regardless of positioning, you'll need another big sac to get good push.
