1999 Malibu Wakesetter - which Hull?

Toronto Boater

Recommended Posts

The attached listing is for the 1999 Malibu "Wakesetter". When I check this site's Resources section though, the only Wakesetter listed is the VLX, which this boat (with direct drive) clearly isn't. It looks more like a Sunsetter LXI. Can anyone please assist with

1. Which hull ? is it the SV23 Diamond (which the Sunsetter has), or the SV23 Wake (which the Wakesetter VLX has)

2. How will the wake on this boat be for slalom skiing at slow speeds (30 mph) and long line (15 off)

It will primarily be a skiing boat (not a wakeboard boat) and the only reason I was considering this one is I thought that perhaps this is truly just a Sunsetter LXI with a tower and wakesetter graphics.

Let me know your thoughts thanks.

Nope, that's not an LXi. That's a Sunsetter LX, on the wake hull. Windshield notch at the rear & lack of transom cantilever are the obvious giveaways, without even looking at the transom for whether or not it's a diamond hull. It's likely that someone updated the graphics & called it a Wakesetter, like you could get in '03 & '04.

EDIT: I missed the last question. If it's primarily used for skiing, I think that I'd hold out & look for an LXi, but that's just me.

I completely agree with the skiing statement. Hold on as hard as it may be and search for a sslxi. Great ski boats with a ton of family/storage space. And with wedge and some ballast wake board decently. I regularly ski behind a sslxi at 32-36mph 22' off and can hardly tell the difference between my '13 response lx and the '11 rlxi my other friend has. Only when I ski them back to back can I tell.

I will keep my eyes open too. I'm in SE Michigan which isn't too close but not too far away. That is if you would be willing to come into the states. I know my local dealer had a beautiful 2002 sslxi for sale. Let me see if they still have it.

Before I asked on this forum, I asked the dealer who has now responded and he says that the hull is the Diamond Hull. And looking at the transom, it seems to look like it has the notch for the diamond hull - what are your thoughts?

the notch seems to look like this graphic for the diamond hull.

And finally, he has now told me that the long block will be replaced due to a hairline crack as a result of improper winterization at some point in the past. The dealer will replace this at no cost to me, but how much of a red flag is this about improper maintenance in the past? Is this a reason to steer clear?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Wake Hull. Even the wake hull dips down a little bit, like the boat for sale, but not to the same extreme as the diamond hull.

Agreed. To show you, take a look at this picture. This is one of my previous boats, & I can tell you for certain that it was on a wake hull. Notice how it dips a little, just not aggressively. The fact that 1) the dealer doesn't know what hull it's on & 2) the winterization issues, I'd run, not walk from this boat.
