breaking belts

I have a 2005 malibu vride and this year we have been going through belts every 5 or 10 hours. We had one belt snap and now it is just chewing up the belts in like 2 or 3 inch sections.

I checked the pulleys and there isn't any rough spots and everything is spinning freely. We tried to leave the last one a little bit looser thinking we might have been putting them on too tight but its still chewing them up. Anyone else have this problem or know of a fix for it?

A really thorough inspection of the system is needed. Do it while running with good lighting and then again with the engine off and belt off. Sounds a bit like an alignment issue.

Bearings going on the alternator? Did you spin it for roughness in motion?

Do you have the original belt to compare to the new one(s)?

In late 93 I bought a new 94 boat. After I sold it, the 2nd owner called and asked if I had any problems with it chewing up belts. He had the alternator checked, rebuilt and eventually replaced.

Still had the same problem. Eventually a shop discovered that even though the boat was a 94 the engine was a 93. The 93 required a different belt than a 94.
