Thanks for oil filter help. Now need oil recommendation

New owner of an 08 247 . It has a brand new HH engine in it installed by the dealer because previous owner fried the old one.

I had about 15 hours on it and did my first oil change. Thanks to the crew for recommendation of the right filter.

I replaced it with pennzoil 40w which is what the dealer said he had put in it initially. The API rating on it says SN. I changed the oil and then we took the boat to Cumberland for 3 days and put another 20 hours on it. I was surprised that by the end I had burned through probably 2 quarts of oil. Does that seem normal? I started going through the oil posts and most guys recommend a diesel oil or something rated CH 4 or better. After searching everywhere this weekend the only diesel oils I could find were 15w40. I couldn't find any straight 40w which is what the pennzoil is.

Which is more important. Getting straight 40w or getting the diesel types but in a multi weight. I also found a straight 50w valvoline racing oil. Is that better?

Would any of his have an impact on how much oil I am burning?

Thanksgiving the help

I'm pretty sure straight 40w is what's recommended in the HH, especially those with oil burning issues.

PCM has actually gone to recommending castrol HD40 in all "heavily ballasted" boats, and changing the oil at 30 hours.

There's also a memo out there from indmar that notes if you run heavy that oil consumption will get markedly worse beginning at the 35 hour mark, as the oil breaks down.

AMSOIL makes a 15W40 Heavy Duty Synthetic Marine Oil that I have been running in my inboards for over 20 yrs. Alot of the boats in our neck of the woods run it. Used them in my older PCM powered Nautiques and both of my Indmar Powered Malibu's. Our Response gets quite the workout during the Barefoot Races here on the river. Never had any mechanical failures with any of my boats. The AMSOIL filter is awesome. I really like the synthetic oils for powersport applications. Mercury/Mercruiser makes a synthetic marine oil also. Not sure of the wt though. I wouldn't recommend running less than 15/40 in a HH. Serious Oil for a Serious Engine. Just an Old Gearhead's opinion. Everyone's situation is different. Good Luck whatever you decide.
