Exaust port smoking

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I have a 2003 Response LXI with a 335 Monsoon. I noticed this year that the underside of my exaust ports gets a little smoke coming off of them after I have been driving above 3000 rpms for a couple minutes. The smoke only lasts a couple seconds after I stop to look. At first i just thought it was just something that got spilled on it last fall, but it keeps happening. The paint is also all burned/corroded off on the bottom of all the exaust ports. All the exaust ports are like this. The cooling system is fine, the risers are not hot. I'm pretty sure the exaust is not leaking. I checked to see if the valve cover gaskets were leaking oil onto the exaust but they seem fine too.

Any ideas? Is this normal to see smoke from the exaust ports? Is it possible the exaust is running too hot and burning the paint off causing smoke? Or maybe the paint is getting old and burning?

Looks like there is a lack of water flow at the base of the exhaust manifolds.I would pull them off and check for internal debris in the manifolds and passages between them, the risers and other water passages. You might also want to look at your impeller and trans cooler for debris (impeller parts, weeds, etc.).

I am going to naively suggest that the manifolds are normal and that the part without paint is the exhaust only part, the water jackets are above the exhaust inlets. I have an old set laying around and may just cut one in half and see.

i had a simmilar issue on my 2002 monsoon it was a combination of storage spray burning off and a very slight leak anter an oil change. the valve cover gasket seeped just a bit when the oil was filled. i ran it for a day and then wiped it all with break cleaner to remove any residue and it has been all good since. There should be very little if any water in that part of the exhaust manifold
