submerged 2009 vtx

Recommended Posts

Had the unfortunate experience of a partially submerged 2009 vtx as a result of forgetting to put in one of the three drain plugs back in prior to launching. Boat platform 5-6inches below water with the nose pointing up before i noticed it when parked in the slip. I would say the tranny was submerged.

I ran out in the rain to bail out the boat by putting in the missed drain plug and turn on the bilge pump. It took about an hour or so to fully drain out the boat. Next morning, i rowed the boat over to the boat launch and manually loaded the boat in the trailer and took it to my Malibu dealer. I did not want to take a chance on starting the engine if there is water in it.

Other than having the dealer changing all the fluids (engine, tranny, gas, and etc), is there anything else I should ask the dealer to check for such as the starter and the alternator? Do I need to worry about corrison in the wiring and metal parts? Would I have electrical problems later on? Also, how do i get the gas smell out of the carpet?

Appreciate any advise from experience. Thanks!

It all depends on how deep the water was inside. You can shampoo and pressure wash the carpet. I would suspect possible starter issues later. But not to sure. I would change all fluids. Tranny, V-drive and engine. Maybe even drain gas?

Good luck and let us know how it works out.

Change the fluids at least twice. Change run for like 10min and change again if you still see any milky look on the oil do it again. If the starter got wet change it same with the alternator. Change the gas. Any plug that got wet undo and dry out spray with electric cleaner and add new electric grease. I say change what got wet because it just a matter of time till it leaves you stuck on the lake good luck. BTW did the bilge not come on.

Thanks for all the responses.

The dealer drained and flushed the engine, and tranny. Replaces all fluids, and then put the boat in the pit and ran the motor for about 15 minutes. Checked fluids again to ensure fluids all okay.

They also checked the both the alternator and starter to ensure all is working properly. Air filter was checke to see if it got wet as well.

Dealer indicated that a little water got into the breather on top of the Tranny, no other signs of water peneteration inside the engine or tranny.

Picked the boat up on Friday, and put three hours on it. Everything working great!

As a new malibu Owner, I thought the bilge pump was hard wired to the battery so I always turned the isolator switch to the of position when docked. Dealer said that i need to keep the isolator switch on at least one battery to avoid bilge submersion problesm due to heavy rainfall and etc.

Otherwise, all is good. Will keep montoring things on the boat going forward.

Thanks again to all who responded.
