Gauges Shut Off and Engine Sputters/Died At Speed

Recommended Posts

I have a 2006 Malibu Wakesetter VLX. Was running it at about 15mph and all of a sudden all gauges shut off and moments later engine sputters and then shuts off. It did it a couple times and then seemed to work fine. Need help troubleshooting potential problem.

Here are my ideas:

1) faulty kill switch

2) battery (dealer accidentally ran both batteries dead and I had to swap a single battery of unknown charge in just before I went out on the water)

3) low gas or moisture in the gas

Thoughts?

Of the possibilities mentioned, the kill switch or a cannon plug makes the most sense. If you've just had the boat in for service, check the cannon plug. It may not hurt to check the ignition switch and ground bus for loose connections. Good luck.

Kill switch.

Try turning on the key and, with the lanyard 'key' in position, establish if you have working instruments. Then try pushing in gently on the kill switch plunger and see if the instruments cut out.

They are quite unreliable.
