Racks on Racks on Racks

Recommended Posts

After many months of waiting finally got my surf racks completed. They are Samson swinging surf racks on the bottom, and on top the factory Malibu swing racks with new surf forks. The new forks swap with OEM forks and allow up to a 3" thick surf board on the bottom. On top you can have an average sized surfboard or wakeboard.

I am sure many of you have felt the pain of not being able to fit a surfboard in the factory racks. The factory forks feel a bit like an afterthought in terms of surfers. These new forks not only allow for thicker board but they are longer so they support the board more so its less likely to damage the board.

I have been dreaming of the day when I could actually have all my boards in the rack and have them all fit, thanks Active Water Sports for making it come true!

Will post more as I get more time with the setup...

A few more details:

- I have the Samson swing racks with the big surf / surf forks on my bottom G3 mounts. The Samson surf racks and swinging mechanism are great I highly recommend them, I can't remember the exact cost but I believe they are almost half the cost of OEM racks from Malibu!

- I chose to not get Samson swing racks in upper mount because they swing in so far they could damage tower speakers. Also I already had a set of Malibu racks which I wanted to re-use.

- You can't get Malibu to sell you OEM swing racks for upper position, they claim they don't fit. Well its true you can't have a wakeboard on their and swing it all the way in without it hitting your speakers or Bimini, but if you like to swing your racks in for trailering without boards in them, its nice to have a swinging rack. For that purpose they work great.

- My solution was to keep my factory racks and move them up to the top, while using these new custom forks so I could actually put larger surf boards in them.

- The bottom slot of the new OEM replacement forks fit slightly thicker boards than the regular Samson surf forks, but the Samson surf forks are longer and more supportive, so its a bit of a trade off. I will use bottom racks first and then only use top racks when I have more / thicker boards.

The new forks are awesome. I bought Samson racks because I couldn't fit my thicker surf-style boards into the Malibu forks. Where did you get them? Is Malibu actually making them now?

I don't think they have a price yet, they literally came off the CNC machine and were on my boat in a few hours :) They were going to get back to me on price.

They made around 70 I hear (35 pairs), so if you want them call them up as I don't know if its going to be a one time thing or not. I suppose it would be based off of interest.

I am sure price wise they will be pretty reasonable as they are just forks not a full rack.

Do they make something like this for the illusion tower?

Samson has swinging racks for Illusion tower. Look around (Bakes has tons of options)... I have found a number of Illusion surf specific rack solutions, but few for G3.

Just sold my Stock OEM Malibu Spinner racks and just ordered another set of the samson Spinner racks, IMO They are more user friendly and prefer them over the stock racks, Now I can hold 6 wake boards and 2 Surf boards,

I have two pairs of racks on mine. they are Menace with the rubber coated tips....been really happy with them. they do not rotate which would be nice but hey I have a vride and I am not sure vrides are allowed to have that kind of bling :-)

my top two have much more of an angle to them, while the bottom two come more straight out creating a nice gap between top and bottom letting me fit in the bindings nicely. The top are wake/wake the bottom are surf/wake.....

if I did it again I would have the top (the ones with more angle) surf/surf........as our wakeskates are to tight on the wake racks........

anyway it is funny with a small family of four the racks are full..........4 wake boards, 2 wake skates and 2 wake surfs........
