Okay thanks so much. I've got to make a decision on racks soon & this just got added to the short list. Part of my problem is that I have no idea how racks actually mount to the tower, so I guess a trip to the dealer may be in order to see for myself (I tend to be really visual that way, explaining it just doesn't usually do it for me).

I'm hoping that my boat gets sprayed this week, but we'll see.

Good luck. It is a little bit of work but its very easy and the results look amazing.

So if they spray is this week it should be ready real soon. Happy days ahead for you. Have fun.

Okay, I took a close look at an Illusion yesterday & I have a better grasp on how everything mounts. Here's a question: is there any reason that the hole that you drill for the bolt has to be threaded? If you're using a lock nut on the inside of the lift off, then it should stay put, right? You could do double-duty by putting a lock washer in there as well, plus maybe some loctite. I only ask because I don't have an easy way to thread the hole myself & I don't trust some welder's shop to do it & not scratch it or somehow damage it.

I can't see why it would need to be threaded...that said, all you need is the right tap and you can tap threads no problem.  The lift off is soft...piece of cake.

Tracie - Now that you have looked at the tower. The only reason I tapped the plate was to added some extra strength. The lock nut would do the job fine.

It was very easy to tap a thread as the alloy is soft. I tapped a thread about half way through the plate for the locator pin as well, and put loctite in the hole. The pin was just a bolt cut to length once it was screwed into place.
