Steering cable adjustment

Recommended Posts

So my son and I put in my new steering cable today. However, it's way out of adjustment. 3/4 turn to the left until stop, and 2-1/2 turns to the right.

Does anyone have any OLD SCHOOL instructions on how to adjust the old style (non rack) steering?

Here's what I was planning to do. Maybe someone can tell me if it's the right approach:

1. Get the rudder centered as best I can by eyeing it.

2. Take the cable out of the spindle helm (not sure what you call it) without moving the cable.

3. Put the helm back together, and get the wheel centered.

4. Turn the wheel 3/4 of a turn to the left.

5. Feed the cable into the helm / spindle while turning the wheel to the right feeding as I go.

6. Feed the cable until the big metal fitting reaches the helm where it's supposed to sit in the socket.

7. put in the bolts and tighten it all up.

Thanks for any help.

John

I think all thats necessary is center rudder, center steering wheel, bolt her up then adjust one tooth at a time if necessary unless u messed with the adjustment at the rudder. That mayeb what u said. not sure.

Sorry smooth, my steering system does not use the rack with teeth like the newer models. It uses the old style cable, so what you're saying will not work. I did what I said last night, and it seems to be pretty good. I think I can get any differences out by removing the steering wheel itself (6 hex nuts) and adjusting it that way.

I've gotta say, the newer rack system is much easier than this old system. Arggg.
