Help with purchasing my first used 09 VLX

I made a deposit on a 2009 vlx, has about 250 hours on it. Its still in storage so I haven't been able to see it yet, only pictures. I been reading on this impeller issue and wondering if this is still an issue on the 09's with Monsoon 350? Should I be concerned, maybe ask the dealer to just change it now?

I also read where the dealer can run it on a computer to check it out, I will ask that this be done and a copy of the printout.

Any other things I should be concerned about, hints or tip, before I take the plunge. Likely a couple months away from the test drive before accepting the deal, just want to be prepared.

You just need to make sure that you change the impeller every 1 to 2 years. If you are real worried about it, change it every year and you will be fine. If you take of them, the Monsoons will go forever.

FWIW there is no "impeller issue". It's a maintenance item shared by all brands and all engines other than the very few which use closed cooling. I'd change it now to be safe. It's cheap and easy and the best preventative maintenance item there is.

Already searching to source a puller, I will take your advice and change it at the start of every season.

You don't need a puller. Pull cover, spray a bit of WD40 in there, bump motor over to move impeller slightly, and pull out with needle nose pliers. Piece of cake. Get a Globe 100J run-dry impeller for piece of mind...I've already put mine to the test when the wife forgot to kill the motor when I pulled the boat out of the water.

Not to thread jack, But what are the consequences of an impeller "issue" I have never changed ours in ~250 hours. I do have 3 spares. We have a cottage so it wouldn't ruin a weekend to change it, just a couple hrs. Just curious what I'm really risking by not changing it?

Use silicone spray not WD40 on this. Don't use petroleum based products on rubber goods.

I would change it anyway. The pieces/ chunks will end up where you don't want them.

You are spraying WD40 on a rubber impeller you are about to throw away. I wouldn't be too concerned about hurting it. :)

Either way you would want to clean the housing in that case. And personally I don't throw them away I keep the old one for a spare.

You mean something more than wash it out with water? Like you'd do to test the install after it's done anyhow?

EDIT: I'm only half being a smarta$$.... isn't one of the recommended winterization procedures to liberally spray wd40 all over the engine? I've never read about masking rubber. Seems like if that were going to be a problem it'd be a much bigger one (sitting all winter drenched in the stuff) than the 10 or so minutes between impeller removal, impeller reinstall, "VROOOM," and it's flushed.

Youre risking not feeding water to the engine and teh temp gauge not being accurate because it needs water to read accurately. Definitely change it.

I use boot slime (like what I use to get into bindings.) Remove cover - Liberally squirt the boot lube onto impeller - Pull kill switch lanyard - Bump the motor without turning over - Pull out with needle nose pliers. Never had an issue getting one out.
