Does a beginner - Novice wakesurfer need to add ballast bags over and above the stock ballast system on a '13 VLX with surf gates?

You'll be able to learn to surf ropeless with stock ballast, wedge, and surfgate. That being said, adding additional ballast will not hurt your situation. It will make it easier to find the sweet spot and stay in the wave but will obviously cause you to burn more fuel....

I would say try it a few times as is, then add ballast a little later this summer so that you have something to look forward to. Plus, when the new Ronix sacks are out in a month or so they will be the hot item to buy!

As long as I can surf ropeless that should do. Like your plan to add later as my skill level grows.

Thanks again.

IMO, even as a beginner you will find it easier and have more fun with a bigger wave.

I learned that adding ballest is a must, Getting the boat lower in the water is better for surfing and once you learn you will want more of a wake the nest session your out. I tried with out a couple of times then added some ballast and found it was much, much better and mor fun. A nice clean wake is more fun and easier.

Are you guys using extra ballast when you are wake boarding? I have stock ballast with PNP and 550's...
