We are looking for a early to mid 2000 something Vtx and or VLX. We dont wakeboard primarily ski and surf. Question is how does a VLX ski and what year did they start building the VTX? Thanks in advance.

Wakesetter VLX, at least the earlier years like 2000-2004 ski pretty good. 05-08 not so much. Our friend has a diamond hull 07 VLX and it is manageable. VTX started in 07 and even the wake hull is really nice for a v drive and the diamond is even better. If you are doing any type of skiing I would get the VTX.

Our '04 skis pretty well for a v drive. 2 people vs. 4 people makes a big difference on the harshness of the wake. We dont surf but I would recommend this hull for your needs. We barefoot and ski in the morning with 3 people and wakeboard/relax during the day with more people in the boat. The vtx's on the diamond hull are better for skiing. You'll have to decide if you prefer boat size over a better wake.

The Sweet spot is the 2004 Wake VLX with the diamond hull if you can find one. Or a Sunscape 21LSV "Fakesetter" from that year. That'll get you awesome slalom wake, great wakeboard wake, it surfs just fine, an dit has the gorilla fins for tracking

If you just want to surf and ski:

- VTX

- 2001 Sunsetter VLX

- 2002 - 2004 Sunscape 21LSV

Those are your best Malibu V-drive choices for your needs; decide your budget which will then decide which of the above you can afford. VTX budget needs to be 40k+. Sunscape budget figure around 23-30k. Sunsetter figure 18-28k. Obviously condition and options will make a difference on the price. You could also get away with a model that has no tower (which will save money), though surf board storage will suck as a result.
