GPS Speed Control

So I just bought a new 2012 23LSV that I won't have delivered until spring that has the standard paddlewheel speed control. This will be my first boat with ANY speed control and I wondered what the experience has been with paddlewheel. Does it work well enough to not need GPS or should I really look at upgrading to GPS?

I have the same boat. The paddle wheel worked good for straight line speed for me. I am on a small lake so have to turn fairly often. I had problems with going over or under speed in turns(on three different make and model boats). I tried a Nauticlogic GPS paddle wheel replacement system. It is an easy install and pretty affordable. I think it is much better than paddle wheel.

BTVLSV, I was looking at the Nauticlogic unit priced at $257 which seems like a pretty good deal, just didn't know if it was worth the money. I guess I'll try out the paddlewheel and see if I have issues, if I do I'll go with the Nauticlogic.

Is the nauticlogic a speedometer or a speed control with a speedometer?

It replaces the Paddle wheel with a GPS sending unit. Unplug paddle wheel, plug in GPS unit and it works with your speedo and perfect pass (on an 04 anyway) that is stock.

so it looks like the options for my 99 SSLXI are

1) take out the pitots and either add the NL2 using the stock speedo and MDC for $249 or

2) take out the pitots and the speedo and install a perfect pass for $1195

?

I also have the paddle wheel, with factory ballast and wedge, surfing, etc... it works good. I tried the Nauti Logic gps this season and had a lot of problems with it. I kept loosing signal and the speed control was not as good as the wheel.

I returned it for a refund, there are others very happy with it... for me it was a complete headache. Nauti Logic could not figure out why it was not working properly.
