Thermostat Gasket

Recommended Posts

Due to a comedy of errors I have to temporarily put a NAPA thermostat gasket on my Hammerhead. I have an Indmar gasket on order from Bakes but it won't be here by the weekend (which is forecasted to be sunny and 68). I plan on replacing the NAPA gasket next week after the Indmar gasket arrives. The problem is, the NAPA gasket has an adhesive back. I don't want to have to clean a bunch of adhesive gook off to install the Indmar gasket. Should I stick 2 of these NAPA gaskets together (back to back) to avoid the adhesive mess? Or, will the adhesive clean off easily? Thanks for your input.

How hard could it be to remove? I wouldn't do two gaskets. But I guess you could and keep checking for leaks. How does the napa gasket compare to the Indmar gasket?

You can coat with grease. Why do you want to replace, the intake manifold should be a standard configuration. I would think the local NAPA or other parts store would have a not adhesive version available, simply a standard Small Block Chevy gasket.

I put one of those generic napa gaskets on my thermo housing this spring and it leaked like crazy. They are a lot thinner than the mercruiser or indmar gasket.

I noticed that the NAPA gasket was quite a bit thinner the the Indmar. That's one reason why I thought sticking the 2 together might work. Did you have trouble getting the cheap gasket off?

If your manifold surface and your thermostat housing surface are flat, as they should be, the NAPA or any other SB gasket will work. Or get a Fel-Pro or Mr Gasket one. Unless there is something special in the Indmar one like the grounding washer in a Mercruiser one, they are all the same. You could stick the 2 together, but you should check and see why a single one is leaking.
