seriously guys you are all welcome over the hill. Nevada welcomes you! Please bring your business too! And your friends and family! No income tax and real estate is 40% off!

Of course you get what you pay for (prisons, cops, a 56% high school graduation rate, and not much else).

but it only costs about $100 a year to register your boat and trailer (trailer is more than boat).

Geeze,

I live in the WRONG state. Good thing I hate politics and don't vote.

No voting? wow, I guess you have no complaints either... wish I could be in that frame of mind. Then again, voting for the president in California is a waist of time if you are a republican, this will always be a democratic state, socialism and handouts.... that what CA is all about. "Work harder so others dont have to...."

You are wise beyond words...come on we have some of the best paid elected HOs in the country...m waters, p starks, senators who refuse to debate anyone: both boxer and difi, d stienberg, and to be fair lets not leave out arnold, as we all know what he was doing to the maid and the rest of Califorians!!

I don't. I take what I get. No one will ever be happy.

I also hate all spectator sports. Why? Did you see what the morons did in S.F. after their team won the game?

I'm an atheist too. I sleep real well not having to worry about these big three, nor do I get into any discussions involving any of these topics.

They caught one of the idiots/morons in SF. I have never understood the mentality of breaking someone else's stuff, but I am sure he'll have time to think about it in jail and pays off the fine....Stupid should hurt!!

Also part of the mentality of living in THE CITY and being a part of that group/herd/pack, whatever that group is.....we also want to be a part of some group....akin to the pack mentality. Maybe he can plead momentary insanity?? the ole hostess ho ho defense!! ha ha

All 3 are touchy subjects....although ya have to admit, (hopefully) that CA is on its way to becoming a third world State/country.... and that change will either be voluntary or if our elected HOs keep the present agenda/pace/attitude, it will be forced by simply running out of our money that they give to folks who don't deserve it. Same as what happened in Stockton...they simply ran out of other people's money to spend. Cause it always feels good when you give free stuff to folks...specially when it is not your free stuff (money) to begin with.

The same mentailty the forest rangers have with animals...don't feed them, or you'll simply attract more animals that want/then demand free food. Same principle works with people.

I think you guys scared away the OP....

Back on topic. Like said before commuting from Reno during the winter months can be tricky. They close hwy 80 quite often due to snow and incompetent drivers. I don't know much about Reno but other's have filled in there.

If you can deal with CA and the rules and regulations (and high gas prices), there are a lot of very nice area's to look at. Boating seems to be a priority for you, but what kind of boating are you into, large lake all day boating (like Lk. Mead?) or quick close ski and back to life? You being use to Las Vegas, do you want to continue to live in a big city? Or are you and your family up for living more in the sticks?

Some of the larger nice lakes in CA that are close to Oakland are: Lake Berryessa, Lake Oroville, Lake Tahoe, Bullards Bar, Camp Farwest, Lake Shasta. Folsom Lake, Don Pedro, and New Melones. I haven't been to all these lakes, but I believe a 4 hour commute would be within the limits of Oakland on a normal day (shasta being the furtherst). There are a ton of other lakes around too, but these are the larger ones around where some people would be willing to drive 10-15 hours and rent a houseboat for the week.

There are quite a few gated communities with small private lakes in N.Cal, but most don't allow boats with additional ballast or boats over 20', so if you are a wakeboarder/surfer these may not be the places to go. There are a lot of smaller lakes in Western Sierra Foothills that offer nice skiing, but usually are not large too large. And usually by Fall the water levels are way down, as they are used as reservoirs for water down the Sacramento River which feeds water to most of the farmers and Los Angeles. If you are around 3000' in elevation expect 1-2 dustings of snow during the winter. Anything 4500' or higher make sure you have 4x4. Most of the towns in the foothills are quite a bit smaller that Reno.

The Delta and Sacramento River is a great place for a quick ski, but there are few family beach areas. Sacramento river can provide great skiing, but the water is usually cold and a 5-7 mph current. There can also be a lot of debre in the water (downed trees and such). There are also a lot of idiots on the water near the larger towns ie Sacramento. I like living in Discovery Bay, its nice to go for a quick ski and be back at home by 9 during the summer. Its really nice not to have to tow. I enjoy being able to go for a ski before or after work. But during the summer the Delta gets very crowded with a lot of less competent boaters on the water. The delta is not very scenic, the water is pretty dirty, but does offer some great skiing conditions. I am a little worried about this under ground canal that our governor is planning on putting in. The talk is to pull water from Sacramento area and bypass the delta completely. I don't know how much this would effect our water quality or even if the line is going in.

Right now during late fall the brackish water comes into about Bethal Island (I would not look at Bethal Island there is a good amount of crime there currently). With a pipe line I'm sure the brackish water will make it into the delta (this will not be good for the farmers). If looking at purchasing around the Sacramento River or Delta be sure to look at if you are in a flood zone.

Just wait til moonbean and the Ds go after prop13.

Here is an unbiased and interesting study, not that recent BS one from Stanford, showing who, why and where businesses and folks have moved and are moving to, and just how much revenue(money) CA has pissed away as a result of trying to build their utopia:

It is definitely more expensive in CA but I love the Bay Area for boating. There actually are some pretty spots on the Delta but not many beaches. If you have kids and want good schools consider renting in a good school district. I would be reluctant to purchase in those areas with good schools as real estate will be insane. We spend most of our time on the Delta but the NorCal reservoirs are awesome.

Discovery Bay is really busy and I generally avoid it al together and never even think about skiing near there on a weekend. But if you can get out during the week it can be good. The Delta during the week is dead, even end of July early August. Plus it's almost always warm.

PM me if you want more info or want to talk on the phone. Just be warned if you want to talk CA politics I will have nothing good to say.

As far as Reno lakes there are also Lake Tahoe and Lahontan Res, if you want to go a south there is Topaz Lake too. I stay away from Pyramid. That lake scares me! Have you heard of all the stories about that lake? You have to play the wind at Pyramid. If the wind comes up, get off. That lake has swallowed numerous boats!

At the risk of veering back on topic...

True about the wind at pyramid. The lake can turn into the ocean for sure. I had very good luck with the wind forecasts at windalert.com

There's a wind buoy in the middle of the lake.

The pyramid stories are mostly superstition, but its definitely a lake that demands respect. Tahoe gets just as windy and rough and definitely swallows more boats than pyramid every year (of course there are 100x as many boats on Tahoe).

That said I'm always surprised that when we are getting off because the wind is coming up, there's some yokel launching a prostar 190 or Sanger flat bottom.

Lahontan and Tahoe are definitely mutually exclusive because of the quagga discovery at lahontan and the rigorous inspections at Tahoe. When there's water, lahontan can be pretty good too, and its sure warmer than Pyramid in May and June. This year Lahontan was done by mid July, and unless we get a huge winter things aren't looking good out there for next summer.
