Moving to Nor Cal/Reno area, need advise.

I currently live in Vegas, but recently took a job in Oakland. I only have to go in to the office once a week, so I have been commuting from Vegas, but we have decided to move closer. We are wanting to be 4 hours or closer driving time to the new job and are therefore looking in Nor Cal area and as far as Reno.

Right now I am being paid as a Nevada resident and don't have to pay state income tax. If we moved to Reno, or northern Nevada I could continue as a Nevada employee. The other option is to move to Northern California where the drive to work once a week wouldn't be as long, but I would have to pay California Tax. The new job was enough of a pay raise that if we did go to Cali, after paying taxes I would make the same as I do in Nevada.

Obviously my biggest concern is boating! While I would rather not pay state income tax I want to be near a good lake so my family can continue enjoying boating when I'm not working. We are not super familiar with either of these places. How are the lakes in the Reno Area and where would I want to live if I moved there? What are the good boating locations/cities in Nor Cal? Right now in Vegas we live about an hour from the lake and we would like to be closer to the water than that. Any suggestions or advise would be great.

Reno kinda sucks for boating. Like LV you will be doing lots of trailering. We go to pyramid and its about an hour for us, but if you lived in Spanish springs its only 30 minutes or so. Pyramid is alkaline so you need to flush and wash a lot more than a clean lake. Pyramid is big and never crowded so you can always get good water as long as it isn't windy. If its windy it turns into the ocean.

We also trailer over to bullards bar a lot, which is 2 hours for us. Bullards can get very very crowded in the summer though.

Boca and stampede are closer (30 min or so?) but are at 6000' and cold. I know there are folks I trucker who are diehards there, but...

For you, the best boating location would be to live around the delta somewhere I think. Discovery bay looks pretty awesome. And closer to oakland too.

You already know how broke Nevada is. The CA guys will tell you how bad it is there too, but as someone who will be sending kids to college in the not too distant future, there sure are a lot more options in state there than here.

EDIT: you also need to consider getting over the pass in the winter. It's 4 hours dry, but can be 12 hours (or not at all) in the snow.

Keep in mind that trailing your boat over the pass will beat up your trailer and tower bushings.

As SD pointed out there are a plethora of lakes, rivers and delta to hit in CA. If you live along the I-80 corridor there is the Capitol Corridor train that might work if you didn’t want to drive. There are two stops in Oakland. I can tell you the I-80 corridor to drive is challenging with traffic stand stills and accidents every day. I can tell you where all the slow spots will be but there really isn’t any alternative given you must cross bridges. It can take me on holiday Friday’s upwards of 3 hours to drive 45 miles. Hence the train can be relaxing and get work done. It’s actually operated by Caltrans and word is it’s actually on time as oppose to Amtrak.

If you snow ski then either location is suitable with plenty of resorts to hit.

As SD pointed out if you need in state residency for college moving to CA is beneficial as there are more schools to choose from CSU, UC, or private.

Not sure if other taxes in NV are more than CA (lol) such as property tax so it’s a wash if you pay income tax in CA. The climate while not horrible in Reno certainly isn’t as mild as it is on the valley floor. In fact a Reno crewmember regularly comes over to ride down here fall through spring.

So long story short if boating activity is your sole goal then imho CA is the better location for that. Discovery Bay is heaven for those that want to live on the water and ride miles of flat water year round. Otherwise there are a plethora amount of lakes or river stretches w/ in 2 hours anywhere in the valley or closer.

CA isn't any pick nick either sorry to say....

I have a colleague who commutes from the Auburn area (20 miles northeast of Sacramento) to San Francisco twice a week. I think he's crazy but he doesn't mind the 2 hour commute at all. He drives most of the way and then takes BART into SF. There are so many awesome lakes in Northern California.

I live in the Modesto area...about 75 mile east of Oakland. The 580 corridor can be a bear, but I have 6 lakes within an hour and the Delta less than an hour away. Water rt now is about 68, going to be close to 80 out this weekend, going out Sunday. some very reasonably priced housing in my area.

Live in Reno and keep the boat closer to the numerous lakes CA has to offer. BUt trailering your boat up and down the hill will tear up both the boat, tower and tow rig.

CA is a smorgousborg of taxes and regulations and new ones every day. There is an annual CA property tax assesssed on your boat, 1%-1.5% depending on which County you store it in.

Avoid Stockton, as it will surpass Oakland as the best place to get shot in CA, and it filed bankrupcty a few months ago.

Jerry moonbeam Brown is looking for folks like you....to tax!!!

I paid 26% state income tax to California in 2011...lol that alone (to me) is worth not living in California. Im on the verge of moving out if i can convince my wife...

Come on now...ole Jerry and Prop 30 seem to think you have a MORAL obligation to pay more taxes.

http://www.businessinsider.com/do-rich-people-have-moral-obligation-to-pay-more-taxes-2012-10

That in large part is why I am in COsta Rica on a Lake that is 20 miles long and 1-2 miles wide and there may be only a dozen boats with engines on the entire lake....13 when mine arrives.

Some need to tell jerry you can't tax your way to prosperity. But you can tax people to the point they move to another state.

You can build a bullet train that won't be a bullet. Not sure what is going on with the Delta and trying to pipe ender 30 some miles of delta to get water to S CAL...another of jerry's think big ideas.

Lol prop 30 is a controversy...my wife's a teacher so its a family controversy right now. Either i pay more in taxes or she gets a 20% pay cut in furlough days...Jerry brown needs to GTFO!!

Anywhere but Stockton! I dont even stop for gas there anymore... that place is a dump. Disco Bay is a great spot, the dirty delta is always full of water, its huge and you can always find a channel or slou that nobody is riding on... but its dirty water... California is over populated, with people and boats... no matter where you live, if you are a weekend boater good luck.... the lakes are slammed on holidays and weekends... unless you are on the water at 6:30am you will never get anything decent. At least this has been my experience. Weekdays are more do-able, not sure how the lakes are in Nevada for crowding??? Just dont get a false impression moving to California will get you prestine lakes, because that is definitely not the case. They only stay full for a short period of time because all the water is sold to so-cal, which also brings up other issues.

Well to be fair, the reason those reservoirs exist is to save the water to sell to LA. Nothing new there. Chinatown with Jack Nicholson is a great historical snapshot.

If you go to pyramid, the lake is NEVER crowded, except within about a one mile radius of the boat ramp. If it's not windy, you will have glass. We got really lucky this year with cooperative water on the weekends.

Nowhere in the bill does it state any of the revenue from this prop will go to schools. He is using it as a scare tactic to get the public to vote for it. It goes into the general fund for back filling other areas. More than half of the state budget is dedicated to schools....how much more is needed and to what end. I believe there is too much administration and teachers and students get the short end of the stick but more money won't get to them and prop 30 wont change that. I bet if the prop fails nothing happens to schools....he folded the last time, just using schools as a pawn......sad. Oh the last 8 tries to increase taxes has failed....

Nevada other than Pyramid is worse... Yes at the height of summer there can be some challenge to find glass but CA has only a 3 month attention span on anything so spring and fall you can easily find good water and of course winter we have all the glass we want. Oh wait we are out of water, big snakes and other flesh eating undocumented species are prevalent in our lakes...stay away for your safety.... :P

It is going to backfill their billions and billions of debt. But over 60% of California's debt is to the schools. Jerry brown owes the cal education over $5billion and thats where the money is "supposed to go" trust me i agree that it is all a bunch of bulls**...but I also think that our schools are screwed as it is...not all of the tax increase is gojng to the schools. But a portion of it will go to pay back the debt so the teachers dont get furlough'd...

Then it should have been written in to the proposition that specific x dollars will go to that specific fund....it didn't and therefore it won't based upon history. I understand if I was a teacher or employed by schools, but pay more to live or a pay cut seems to be a loose loose situation either way.

Just watch what happens to Stockton, casue there are many more watching and waiting to follow Stockton's footsteps. The city, county and state PERS obligations is what is killing and going to kill the state. Not sure where you're getting the 60%, but over 80% goes to paying everyones retirement (PERS)...and that is going to double in something like 10 years.

And yes they lie to ya all the time...first it was going to be the lottery that would fix the problem, then it was indian casinos, now this...Until the folks of CA say enough is enough, they keep on spending more than they take in, businesses will continue to leave, and folks with money will leave.

Just the tip of the ice berg, but watch this, and notice the defensive attitude of Jerry, like how dare you.....what's orange and sleeps 4...a CALTRANS pickup!!

This is where some of your tax dollars go:

The 60% i came up with is the debt that the government has physically borrowed with an IOU to the education. Which is somewhere around $5billion alone. Not including the other 40% in IOU's he has out to other organizations.

I don't recall tha exact number, but over 80% of the annual budget goes to paying retirees/PERS....How can you run, build, maintain a state when 80% of your budget goes to your retirement obligations....that is why in large part Stockton filed bankruptcy, as they built all kinda stupid stuff like the arena and the water front (which is 99% empty) with borrowed money. Heck Stockton has had to forfeit several buidlings and even a parking lot back to the lien holder(s), casue they could not make the payment(s).

Just watch, you're gonna the the entire state of CA on ebay pretty soon.
