How to remove impeller

Recommended Posts

When mine doesn't want to come out I squirt a little binding lube (hair conditioner) in with the impellor, hold the cover in place to avoid slinging lube everywhere, and bump the starter to rotate the impellor. Then using two needle nose pliers, grab onto two fins 180* from each other and pull. Never had one not come out after that. Thumbup.gif

Squirt a little WD 40 and crank the engine w/ lanyard disconected for a second or two. Should pop right out with a needle nose. Takes all of about 15 min. to do the entire process of changing the impeller.

And that's if you stop for a beer in the middle.

Be sure and use the "Blue" Run Dry impeller. It lasts 3-4 years. They cost about the same and are far superior. I replaced mine last year with one. Works great. You can actually run the engine without water for a minute without damaging this impeller.

The lude isn't really needed once a crank of the engine is done, then again you might like the sudsy clean look. Biggrin.gif Plus I don't have the potential of lube spray.

IF you are bumping the starter and have your hands in the engine area, pull the lanyard from the switch so it will not start.

Not a bad idea but I had the spark plugs out anyway.

IIRC the replacement specifically said to not use WD 40. The Johnson replacements comes w/ a glycol lube tube to grease it up so it dosn't get damaged until water makes it in.

By the way, what is everyone paying for impellers? I got one at my dealer last week and it was $41 plus change out the door. I didn't remember them being over $30.

Ordered mine last week, along with a host of other items, from skidim for $29.99. Same price as the local West Marine where I purchased last year.

Thanks for the advice, I bumped the engine after I lubed it up and it came right out.

Hey Justin - Tongue.gif Glad it worked for you Sporty. Thumbup.gif

Don't do anymore than a quick bump or you'll be blowing fuel out the plug holes. Cry.gif
